Rusty top tailgate.

I thought I would share my project regarding so many of us on here having a rusty edge on the top tailgate.
It usually happens when water gets behind the seam sealant on the inner edge and spreads to the outer edge like this.

I then removed the letters and trim piece from the top door and lower door.



Next was removal of the lower glass trim. I had to heat it up with a hot air gun to make it supple enough to remove it. I would presume this is fitted when the glass is glued to the door frame. it came out with a bit of persuasion.



I have noticed on the later models that this is not fitted, a good idea as you can see where the rubber edge has cut through the paint and started to rust. I wont be re-fitting it as it will be a pain to re-fit.



The paintwork was then rubbed down with 240 grit wet and dry paper. I was surprised how much paint was on the panel.



You can see in the next picture how the rust has eaten into the steel. The other side was just surface rust.



This shows where the seam sealer has fallen off due to the rust in the seam. I cleaned this up the best I could with a small rotary wire brush and applied a couple of coats of rust converter.



There was rust where the number plate light fitting fits, this was also treated with rust converter.



I then applied some fine filler to the pitted areas and left it to set overnight. This is what it looks like after a final rub down with some 400 grit wet and dry.



The next job was to mask up the door and cover the inside of the vehicle with dust sheets. I used plenty of sheets as the paint dust although dry in the air, gets everywhere. Apply some primer. a couple of good coats on top and three good coats on the underside where the seam had badly rusted.



The primer was then rubbed down with 600 grit wet and dry to smooth off any pips and dust particles.
I used three aerosol cans of Land Rover paint to paint the outside and the seams, making sure I applied plenty to the seams and the edges. Typical of aerosols, the second coat gave a splutter with a couple of runs to the colour coat. I had to wait an hour before flattening the runs with 1500 grit wet and dry before finishing with the last coat. This was left for a couple of hours to dry.



After this I then applied 4 coats of clear lacquer allowing around 10 minutes per coat. This is the finish after the last coat.



After leaving the lacquer for around four hours, I injected a good quantity of Ankor wax into the inside of the bottom edge of the door, hopefully stopping any further rusting. This half of the project was done the week before Easter.
If you all remember we had a good week of sun. A couple of days later, the excess Ankor wax was dribbling out of the drain holes at the bottom of the top door and running everywhere. It hopefully means that it should have found its way into all the crevices inside the door so it can do its job.
It took me an hour to clean it off all the paintwork with white spirit.

Tonight after leaving the paintwork for a couple of weeks to harden off I polished up the door with some Farecla G3 cutting compound. This is needed as the lacquer sinks into the colour coat slightly and the shine goes off it a little. Then I used some Farecla G10 and finally finished it off with some Autoglym super resin polish.



I then fitted the new Titanium letters that I bought last November and fitted the trim piece and HSE letters that I sprayed up with some Titanium paint and satin lacquer.



Colour is ever so slightly darker, possibly due to 10 years of sunlight and weathering, but a good match from the aerosols, certainly much better than a rusty tailgate. The Titanium letters and trim are a good contrast, much better than the Brunel finish.

I just bought a non rusty tailgate 2nd hand (bargain price!) and OH fitted! (Copious amounts of waxoyl too) Laughing Very pleased...

It was an annoying bit of rust - the only bit on the car that let it down! All sorted now though. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography

my inner rear wheel arches had surface rust , the rubber that goes on the rear door traps dirt against the arch , I ground them down to bare metal and did a few coats of hammerite smooth silver, they look spot on now as its a good match to the cars silver

How did you get the trim strip above the licence plate off? Just a flat head screw driver and pry it?


Also where did you get your titanium silver spray paint? Is it OEM? Get from dealer?

The trim above the number plate is stuck on with double sided adhesive tape. If you are careful it will prise off with a plastic type removal tool. Be careful though, as in the middle of it on the underside is a hole (something to do with the plastic injection manufacturing?) and will snap at that point if you are not careful.

Paint is BMW Titan/Titanium Silver, bought from a local Halfords motor accessory shop. You should be able to get it from a BMW dealer on your side of the pond. Other silver colours should be a good match, I just used the colour that most members on here recommended.
