ICE Question: Are the MID and MFD swappable ?

I have an RR with the LCD display unit and a single slot CD above it. The pixels are dying, so I am looking at the options. With my system, the radio unit is contained within the single CD unit.

Would it be possible to move the CD player to the glove box, and move the existing loom down to it. Then remove the MID unit, and fit the multifunction display ( the TFT screen unit ) into the dash.

Would the cable that plugs into the MID simply plug into the MFD ? From what pictures I have seen is that it would. However there is a blue connector on the back of the MFD .... does anyone know what that is for? ( Nav? )

As far as I can tell, the MID and MFD simply hook into the iBus line and listen to an send commands, and that they adapt their options to what they see and hear on the IBUS line.

So If i simply move the CD player/radio unit, then it'll still be available on the IBUS network, and the new display will show all the controls for it.

Does anyone think that would work?

I dont want Nav, so not worried about those aspects of it. V8 or else ...

No.

That was one of the things I tried out when I did my nav retrofit - especially as the BM54 radio unit is one of the most expensive pieces in the retrofit. Despite the fact that the wiring to the CD54 (as that unit is called) and the BM54 is the same and both are controlled via the I-Bus, no sound, no control, and no radio on the dispaly when the CD54 was plugged in in place of the BM.

Just out of curiosity, tho, why do you not want the nav? And that big monitor with just radio function?

I've been thinking too, as I've read a number of requests of the past months, would anyone be interested in a nav retrofit kit for around GBP 1600-1900? Possibly with upgraded functionality (touchscreen, ipod integration, etc) for somewhat more? Fitting time for the basic nav would be around 6-8hrs. with a custom retrofit loom.

I figured that the nav side of things would need a full new loom, the BM radio, the nav computer and the mfd ... which made it more expensive than it really needed to be. Plus, I have a tomtom, and an iphone ... i'd manage to find where I want to go ! I was just firguring whether it could be popped in without much fuss and relocating a couple of things.

At least you've answered the question of whether the MFD would work or not ... pity about that. i'd probably just be better getting the pixels fixed. I was just thinking out loud really.

A feature I am really wanting is camera monitors .... a trailer one and a reversing one. I think my plan now will be to have a monitor setup on the dash above the centre speaker that doesn't look too awful.

The other thing is that I have the medium spec speaker system, so by looking at the wiring, it wouldn't be too hard to replace the system with a custom one. V8 or else ...

Ok, how bout this: nav retrofit with a CarX Car PC added (have you seen daveo's thread)?
This way you'll have the cam(s) and everything else integrated w/o anything else tacked to the dash or floating around the car (something I really dislike).

Installing the retrofit loom for the nav involves removing the center console, the driver's seat, left rear 2/3 seat, and the trim to hold the carpet down as well as the upper dash pad. Really not nearly as bad as it sounds. The new loom then plugs into the old where the CD54 used to be - and after that it's pretty much plug n play.

I have a relatively upscale CarPC with SSD, etc. but an old laptop like Dave's works fine too.

It's funny. Talking about this thread yesterday evening with an acquaintance and he offers a complete nav with all modules and loom - and DSP. He wants around GBP1800.

Back-up cam and iPhone integration could be done for around GBP150 extra.

I can 'talk' you through the install - it really isn't too difficult. Or if you feel like a trip to the Alsace... Laughing

Interested?
