TD6 Poor mpg.

After around 6 months of motoring in the full fat, reading the many posts on the forum, our motor is not very good with the mpg figures.
Compared to the P38 it seems a bit poor. P38 figures in brackets.
Around town 20mpg (20mpg).
Solo on a good run mainly motorways 25mpg (30mpg)
Towing the twin axle tin tent at the weekend 50 mile journey with 6 miles of road and the rest motorway 17.2mpg (22mpg).
The last figure is from the on-board computer, all the other figures are with brimming it, using it and then brimming again.
The P38 was re-mapped by Pete Bell from around 135bhp to 150bhp. the full fat as far as I know has not been touched.
I know the full fat is around half a ton heavier, but has around 20bhp more, has a newer technology engine, etc.
It pulled the caravan miles better than the P38 (1790 kg fully loaded).
As a like for like basis, I would have expected better mpg. The engine in the full fat has done around 17,000 miles. Could it still be a bit "tight" with that mileage?
I don't pamper it when I drive it, neither does it get thrashed.
Any pointers please?

Steve,

Those figures don't seem too bad at all in my experience. My TD6 would only do 21mpg, and as well as my heart's desire, it was one of the reasons I wanted to move up to the TDV8 (3.6) as it could actually return 25mpg.

Like you say, it's very low mileage (how come?) so has plenty of time to loosen up and settle down further.

Do the basics to see if you can make improvements:

Check tyre conditions and pressure are correct
Check air filter isn't blocked up or the cover has been put back badly (allowing dirt and debris in)
put a few cans of fuel additive through it and run a few tanks through
Ensure it is serviced regularly and correctly.
Don't drive round with roof racks, roof boxes etc (if you have them)
You may want to do the EGR modification if it hasn't been done already

I would say those figures were about right.
Mine will average less than 20 on the daily run round (lots of stop start and only 3 miles each way so no time to warm up)
Just done about 1500 miles to France and back towing a small trailer one way and doing 80 on the Autoroute ave was 25.4 for the round trip on the OBD. Can get the OBD to read 35+ at 55 on the flat. I run with a plug in chip no EGR and a K&N which feels more lively than standard, but no doubt someone will be along who is doing 40mpg. Mine was a blue one! Smile

Round the doors mins is doing 22 to 24 and gets the boot at times on a run i can get between 30 and 32 fully loaded with fishing gear and two in also cases and four in blackpool run 70 and at times above same returns,
i would look at your air filter and see if its clean first
Could always buy mine and it would pay for itself in time with what you would save on fuel LOL

Thanks for all the replies.
@RRUK.
Been through everything you mentioned. The low mileage is due to a replacement engine, as when i bought the vehicle the original engine was a non runner, but came with an engine with a guaranteed mileage of 15,000 miles. The vehicle its self had 119800 miles on the clock. I have since done just short of 2,000 miles.
Items done when the engine was fitted:
New air filter, fuel filter, oil and filter.
I have run two tanks fulls of injector cleaner through it.
Tyre pressures are fine, no roof rack fitted, also done the EGR modification.
It gets looked after mechanical, cleaning and everything else by me. I have heard passing local remarks made about me as Mr. Anal. It doesn't bother me though as with that reputation, the P38 was sold 6 weeks before I had the full fat on the road.

@Stan.
Not complaining about the fuel usage, just expected it to be marginally better than the P38.
Still miles ahead in driving experience and everything else compared to the P38.
Has put my mind at rest though to find out there is nothing wrong, going off other peoples similar mpg.

As mentioned by others, your consumption seems normal. Best I've ever got was just over 26MPG but I was in a convoy with some old Series Land Rovers doing 75KPH on the freeway all day. Very Happy

Normally a combined average of 21. Cars now got 230,000KM on it.

I would honest recommend getting it chipped - mine, on mixed urban/motorway runs went from around 22mpg to around 28mpg. 2002 Range Rover Vogue

3.6TDV8 with 1800kg ish tintent on the rear I get 18-21mpg...depending on situation. Small sacrifice I think when you see some of the caravan numpty's with big twin axles being towed by a VW Golf... Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Might look to getting it remapped later this year.
Another thought, having a look around various places on the internet and not finding much info, do the injectors have to be coded.
When I fitted the new engine, I never re coded the injectors to the engine ecu.

I don't tow and I don't carry heavy loads. Town driving about 18mpg. On a long motorway run I can get over 30mpg. My normal average figures are 23-24 mpg.

I have a TD6 with over 100,000 miles on the clock. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Since getting mine, a full service, remap, deleted the egr removed viscous fan and what made the biggest improvement getting the rear bushes replaced/tracking sorted now I get 25mpg on my regular 7 mile trip, on a long run will now hit 35+mpg

Another conundrum to throw at you all.
Since the engine transplant last year, I have been running it with an EGR blanking unit. Today I thought I would fit the EGR unit and see how it runs with it.
After fitting it, I started the motor up. Idles nicely, but when you press the accelerator it is very slow to pick up and will stutter all the way to 3,000 rpm, after that it is free revving up to the red line.
Tried in drive and reverse and it just won't go at all. No black smoke.
These are the listed faults:

Using IIDTool BT V3.0 B1660

ECM-Engine (DDE4)

P0480-08 Engine fan control malfunction - open circuit/short circuit to ground - General failure information - bus signal/message failure
IP-Instrument Pack

0xBD EBV function fault received from ABS ECU

Nothing bad there (I know about the engine fan control).
No air leaks, perished hoses, nothing.

Anyone have any pointers please?

I'd also add getting a proper 4 wheel alignment done. Not just a tracking adjust by kwikfit but a proper 4 wheel computer alignment, they'll check rear track as well as camber, caster and centre line. If the alignment is all over the place you'll waste fuel and wear tyres.
