Is RSE 'old hat'?

As I struggle - for now at least - to find a suitable/ nice replacement L322, I'm put off by those without RSE as our outgoing model had it and it was used regularly.

Opinions welcomed.

Thumbs Up

How old are you kids ? I like the whole integration thing . My girls are three and six so it works well for them and the six year old can now use the remote and they don't mind the small screens, but older kids might moan about them .
Really good sound though which can be at odds with the low-fi screen and I have never plugged a console in either . 2008 MY Supercharged

four zone climate
remote park heater
and no ugly kid windows.

IMHO - Old hat - makes the car date very quickly

My kids would far rather use iPads - and they cost a lot less too.

Even fairly young kids are happy to sort iPads out for themselves & don't need much adult help.

Ask your kids if they would rather have RSE or a new iPad........ Whistle

I would say yes, as now you can have any kind of tablet, samsung, ipad, huddle2 ect and watch downloaded movies and game....then when you get to destination they can be brought in and still keep little ones happy watching films!
BUT
Down side to this is if your parked up and not wanting to take the tablets out of the FF you need to find a 'hidy hole' for then so not easily nicked if the car was broken into. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

There is an upgraded (in 2008) Kenwood system fitted to my car and it's still working perfectly - no complaints at all from anyone and the screens in the headrests look like they were meant to be there. the ipads and others I have seen just look like add ons and as mentioned you need somewhere to put them - just my 10 pence worth as I driver I could care less about what the passengers do as when I was a nipper all we had was plastic seats, burnt legs and a copy of the Beano Laughing

+1

And then when you arrive the ipad goes in the house and continues to be useful unlike RSE Thumbs Up

I wanted RSE, car I bought didn't have it but had the Rosen headrest fitted (which wasn't what I really wanted) but with hindsight I think they are arguably better than the standard system because each screen can operate independently of each other - ie the kids can watch different movies, or one can be playing arcade games while the other watches a DVD or TV.

So even if you don't go down the iPad route, you still have an option for rear screens. 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ
2014 (L405) VSE in Black with Ivory
2011 (L322) VSE in Black with Ivory
2005 (3.2 V6) Porsche Cayenne in Black with Savanna
1999 (P38) VSE in Burgundy (?) with Sand

The value of RSE all depends on who the user is. My three year old is too young for an iPad - he'd drop it mid way through a journey, but he loves watching Lion King or Jungle Book on the RSE. I am sure our six month old will also be a fan in about a year.

Likewise, my elderly parents wouldn't want to watch a film on an iPad, but would watch on RSE.

A built in system also has some obvious advantages to iPads - it's always there, no forgetting to take it with you, charge it up or remove it from the car to prevent a break in.

I am sure when my kids are older, they will also be glued to their iPads and whilst I'd not spec a new car with RSE due to the extortionate cost, I'd certainly welcome it on a 2nd hand buy.

I don't see any downside to it being fitted and don't really understand why RSE would be considered old hat or dated, but each to his own Thumbs Up 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

I don't have RSE and never missed it. I think the iPad/other tablet is the way to go, but I understand the reasoning with very young children.

I think the issue with RSE and other, similar tech, is the pace of progress. A three year old car isn't OLD, but a three year computer or tablet or phone is seen differently by some.

I think I remember some excellent posts on the forum about integrated iPad holders on the backs of the front seat.that would help with those unable to hold their own tablets.

I think Land Rover sell ipad holders as an official accessory.

RSE would be great if it had the ability to be upgraded, ie. HD screens and a blueray changer. But it doesn't so becomes dated quickly.

On the other hand it still looks cool and impresses people when you tell them you have an inbuilt DVD system that plays on screens mounted in the seats. I mean lets face it you can shove an ipad in a Fiesta, but having it all built in is Kudos.

In terms of functionality though, ipads or laptops probably make RSE redundant (apart from the sound system). In which case cocktail tables on the seat backs would be more useful.

Had it as a retro fit. Despite re-rigging it up with carpc, never really used it, never really needed. Kids too old now! better than a gimmick, so good to have on board, but not as useful as the rain sensor Wink .

I had a aftermarket system in my D2, one of the cheap type that just hangs off the headrest, and when he was younger my son used it regularly but since he got a tablet he hasn't bothered.

When I was looking to buy a FFRR I wanted one with RSE, mainly as Joe90 and Zirconblue say because it's more than a gimmick and there the kudos factor of saying you have built in DVD.

To be honest while it would be nice to have I doubt it would get much use now as he is a bit older. Same with the tv in the front.

I do like Craig's iPad system though Thumbs Up
