If you want something in lovely condition with good provenance I think that £25k is too low for a 2010 MY VSE.

I think this one proves the point and looks like a lovely buy from a well respected site sponsor

As far as warranties go, small dealers will mention a '3 month warranty', these are usually not actually a warranty at all, and really just a load of jargon to put you off taking the car back for serious faults. Many exclude the front axle for example, because the majority of cars these days are front wheel drive so that means they can argue against paying out for drive shafts, steering, gearbox/diff etc. In reality though, if something fails and 'warranty' excludes it, then you can claim from the retailer under your statutory rights. Of you course this might involve small claims court if the dealer is unreasonable. So if you buy a low mileage car with full service history and the gearbox goes bang after 5 months, you should be able to claim from the dealer that the car wasn't fit for purpose as it hasn't lasted a reasonable amount of time. - I'm not saying it's easy though.

Best thing to look for is an "insurance backed warranty", warranty direct, warranty wise etc. Read the terms of it and make sure it covers all the important stuff and see what the claim limits are. If a dealer is supplying such a warranty with the car, then they still have to pay for it and will want to give you the cheapest one possible, so use it as a negotiation point. ie. rather than knock them down on the price of the car, try and get them to upgrade the warranty instead. Insurance backed ones are basically no different to making an accident claim, they verify the fault and pay out up to the claim limits. If you're buying one yourself though, you may be better self insuring, i could have had one from warranty direct for £1100 a year, but decided just to put that money in the bank instead. If nothing goes wrong i'm £1100 better off and i can save more by doing my own servicing.

As for the Land-Rover one, i've just had a look at the handbook for it, to confirm it's similar to the Jaguar one which i had experience of. Like the Jaguar one, it offers different levels of cover. The cheapest one, only covers major components there's a specific list. The most expensive one covers pretty much everything apart from wear and tear. If a dealer offers a car with "Land-Rover Warranty" check which level it is they're offering. If you're buying privately the manufacturer backed warranties are normally transferable to the new owner.

Zircon blue, thanks for your considerable time/effort/input.

I'm swaying towards holding off till the end of the year, prob contacting the sites sponsors and basically seeing what if £25k gets me into a 4.4 VSE. Plus buy a full loaded warranty from Warranrty wise or Direct and hold £2-3k in a car account in case of issues.

Appreciate your input, I just need to get her indoors happy so when my lease is up I have more chance of getting my 911 C4S I want.

Don't forget that RR prices "firm up" in the Winter, so your budget won't go as far as it will in the Summer months.

I have a Warrantywise policy which I extended from 3 months given by the dealer (Gary Elliott) to 12 months at a very good price Thumbs Up

I have only just entered the FF club (first rr) and this forum in particular, have found an absolute wealth of knowledge regarding everthing RR. However reading this post makes me a little sad regarding Saxton 4x4. I have no doubt that they offer questionable cars like every dealer ever but that does not mean in any way that they deal exclusively in poor cars. They are certainly not experts in RR, thats for sure i speak from personal experience. I bought my first FFRR from them and at the time had never set foot in one. I usually buy all cars privately but because the complexity of the RR i felt a RAC warranty and a dealer was the way to go. I understand that i am at the budget end of FF ownership with my 4.4 ajv8 ab 05.

All said and done Saxton supplied me a one owner car with full and complete MD history, which i am very happy with and has no major issues to date, unlike many new members who have brought one only to be instantly up the proverbial river without a gearbox.

Anywho just because they are not experts and the staff look like they should be in Towie does not mean that a good car does not end up coming through the Saxton showroom. I am sure there are better places to go, no doubt and i trust the guy's here on FFRR but my experience was pretty good Thumbs Up

^^ thanks for bringing a bit of balance. The malice against them does question your resolve about using them though. No fire without smoke but it may just be a few bad cars and LRs are know to be , let's say "troublesome"

They do have a pile of stock so any comments re them or other stockists appreciated.

Joker thanks, never used that website..... I couldn't buy one I think over 70/80k miles. Plus I do love Blqck on Ivory, but having two black cars at the moment I'm thinking dark grey with Black might be more suitable.

I assume therefore that Gary Elliott believes these are the best warranties to go for?? And can I ask what region "very good" is in??

Warrantywise and warranty direct are good warranties, not quite up to the best LR one but nowhere near the price either.

The key which most are trying to say is to buy the best car you can find with good history and also check its warranty history. The first 3 years are documented by JLR and all dealers can check this for you.

If you want to minimise the risks then buy from a specialist like Gary Elliott who can facilitate a good warranty. He's very fastidious about what he buys in so your chances of getting a duffer are minimal. He just doesn't stock junk, all his motors are lovely.

The other way of course is to buy from a main dealer where you will get 2 years JLR warranty. Of course this isn't free, you'll pay more for the same car.

The places to avoid are the ones who are not JLR specialists. These are complex vehicles and your village garage is unlikely to understand what to look for when selecting their stock. EBAY, Autotrader, WBAC.com, auctions etc, well you take your chances; they're cheaper for a reason. Just remember, these cars are very capable of throwing you a bill of several grand without batting an eyelid, Unless you're handy on the spanners I really would avoid cheap cars.

25k will get you a very nice 06-09 3.6 VSE but if you're looking at a 2010 or later you're a bit light to get a decent one.

Best thing to do is give him a ring and have a chat, especially if you have something in mind you'd like him to look for Thumbs Up

He'll be able to give you some figures for him to extend a warranty for you Thumbs Up

Been looking at reviews.... Is the 2010 facelift for the Russians and Chinese??

Some cracking reviews on here and a few complaints, gives a nice balance but makes me want one even more.

Well it has become their biggest market, so yes it's probably tailored slightly towards their tastes.

Just like in the past Range Rovers (and Jaguars for that matter) were very much biased towards the US market. Hence they could continue building large V8 Petrol engined beasts and still make a profit from them. Diesel's always came as almost an after thought. I mean why build Diesels for the UK market, when probably 70% of the cars you build are being bought by Americans who pay 40p a litre for petrol. China and Russia have over taken the US i think.
