Tdv8 turbo failure

Hi All,

Just joined the forum, hoping you all ,at be able to help me out...
Couple of months ago I bought myself a tdv8 range rover. 3.6 l322 Absolutely love it to bits. Until...

Driving this evening, had a definitive pop, or bang, then alot of smoke and no power..
Popped off the top inter cooler hoses to find oil in both, dipped the dipstick, and it was just on the bottom.
Pretty certain it is one of the turbos..

So, I need to geth them off to get them repaired/serviced. But I was wondering if there is a guide, or even a rough 'how to' anywhere that I could have a read at before stripping it out.

I'm told I can do it without removing the engine, by several people now, so if anyone can shed some light I would be eternally greatful

Cheers in advance,to anyone who can help me. Pretty Censored with it right now Sad

R/H turbo is easy to do, DIY. Allow around a day if you have not done one before

L/H is a right PITA. Diff has to come out, Engine needs supported, Subframe needs dropped. Allow probably 2 days for DIY

Removing the downpipes and checking for oil may point to an individual turbo. However, as these turbo's can be quite fragile, it would be worth having them both replaced/reconditioned

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your bad news.

I've just bought a TdV8 in the UK and having it prepped. The indie suspected a turbo problem and stated that it's a body off job, 25 to 30 hours.

Fortunately they now say not, but no, not an easy job by all accounts

Good luck, Jerry

Hi guys!
Thanks for the help so far.

I know from just google that it's not a quick job, seen someone actually dropped the whole drive train out the bottom to do the job. Thinking that may be easier than fighting it. I've got a ramp and all the lifting kit around to remove everything. So I'm not too worried about that. As for the turbos, I'm going to drop both off. I've got a place I've used before for my other vehicles called midland turbo's. Have done really good work for me.

Sadly it was a private seller. And even if it was trade, I don't think they would pay for everything, or even do the job properly, been there, seen it done badly before :S lol

I'm probably in about as deep as you, repair cost wise if your doing both turbos, compared to my tranny.

My RR will be off the road for a while. However, I picked it up for a good price even factoring in a tranny refurb.

They're a nice vehicle. ______________________________

oil in turbo pipes

how much oil is acceptable in the turbo pipes, on mine when i changed the hoses last year i noted that there was a thin film on the inside of the intercooler pipes, not a great amount to be honest. The disco is another matter though. it has a pretty decent drip if you undo the bottom of the hose?

I was just wondering if this is particularly normal on either of the engines? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
