Hi all,
Went to view an 04 plate 4.4 today. Had 75,000 miles and was a lovely old thing. However, on tick over there was a really loud mechanical "clacking" sound that seemed to be coming from the right side of the engine (as you look at it). Once revved the noise disappeared. Then only once it had settled on tick over, did it come back.

I walked away pending the seller allegedly taking the car to a garage for a diagnosis. However, he could tell me any old thing I suppose, so I was hoping for folks suggestions?

Timing chain guides, possibly. Have a search for that. Bmw engines are susceptible to degradation and disintegration of the plastic guide. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Don't buy it, timing chain or Vanos gone due to not enough oil changes, cost a fortune to fix.... plenty more out there..... Pete

I agree. Loads of choice out there. Spend a bit of time finding the right one. I ummed and arredd over mine for 4 weeks or more.

If you find one thats not local to you, try posting on here and see if a fellow member local to that area would go and have a look, after all, you're in no safer hands than a FFRR member

I personally think you can find worse things to do on a Saturday morning than go and look at FF's, especially when its someone else's hard earned
