Hi all, wonder if you could help - was on the motorway today and an amber message came up the dashboard saying, DVP Full check owners manual, (it may have been DFP), a minute later the error cleared. Does anyone know what this means, hope I have remembered it correctly. Tried looking in manual and googling but couldn't find anything. The car is a MY2011, 4.4V8 diesel.

Yes, that could well have been it - can't dind anything about it in owners manual, do you mind telling me what it is? I did also notice a big of smoke coming from exhausts when joining the motorway. What does DPF Full mean?

Diesel Particulates Filter... they collect all the soot then burn it off.... Pete

DPF's basically just collect up all the black soot. Eventually they'd just clog up and block the exhaust, so they have to regenerate to clear them selves.

They're not specific to Range Rover's most diesel cars have them these days. To regenerate the engine raises the exhaust temperature to break down all the soot into finer less harmful ash, some cars inject a fluid into the fuel to make it burn hotter but i think there are other methods. To do this the engine needs a to be run for 30min or so above 40mph ish. So basically that's a short motorway journey. If you do lots of town driving, the DPF can't regenerate as you're not above 40 long enough to do it, so they fill up with soot.

So if you have a car with a DPF and only really drive around town, take it for a good blast once a month on the open road (it does the car good in other ways too)

DPF as explained above, but to add. The particulate filter holds particulates collected when your engine is cold or at low revs and then when you go on a main road/motorway for a prolonged period the particulate filter heats up and burns off all the particulates gathered up after your last faster trip.
Now, if you live in London (as i see you do) and as many Londoners do, use your car mainly as a city car! You need to remember to take your car for a run as often as once a fortnight (if used for commuting) as the soot will fill the DPF and bring on an orange warning lamp (the one you saw today) IF you DO NOT heed the warning and the light goes to RED!!! You have a slim chance the dealer can force a regen BUT... More often than not they cannot! Leaving you with a BIG bill for a replacement DPF!
If the orange light comes on, you need to run the car at between 50 & 60 MPH constantly for five to twenty five miles depending how long it wants! Most of the time it only takes five or so miles to put the light out
