Although I am a huge fan of the FFRR, I remain deeply unimpressed with the Satnav. It is dimwitted, picks silly routings, the traffic monitoring system panics about non existing holdups, and the nav updates are ridiculously expensive. But then isn't it made by a company called Denso? Says it all!
It really excelled itself today on a trip to the centre of Falkirk (a large Scottish town which has been around for many centuries). It tried to route me through the centre of Edinburgh, where I would have averaged about 10 mph in the inevitable gridlock, instead of round the bypass, where I could drive at 60-70 mph. But the trouble really started when I left the M9 to head into Falkirk, and at this point it seemed to have a complete nervous breakdown, taking me into the middle of an industrial estate before just giving up completely and removing the green line. I checked our actual position on my phone, and it was nowhere near where the satnav said. It was as if it had completely lost all satellite comms. When I switched the ignition on for the return trip, it seemed to recover, and worked in its usual dimwitted fashion on the way home.
Has anyone else experienced similar symptoms? 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

If you want a sat nav that works buy a Tomtom , I did, and I can update it any time I like and it doesn't involve an expensive trip to the stealers

The only reason to get a factory Nav, is the reversing camera, which it does very well. You don't expect it to navigate as well, it is a ffrr  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I have to say that the Google maps navigation on my Android phone is vastly superior to anything else I've ever used, including TomTom. As long as it has 3G (or better) for the real time stuff even the traffic is spot on.

As for the Nav in the FFRR, well the hard drive version is better than the older DVD stuff but the traffic TMC stuff might as well not be there. The routing it suggests can also be somewhat suspect, bordering on almost useless.

Now, if only there was a way to have Google maps on the main screen

If I set it to take me home from Edinburgh (to Dundee) it takes me off the motorway at Perth, to go through Perth, out to Coupar Angus, then into Dundee that way, instead of staying on the M90/A90

Most satnavs (tomtom, google, what ever) will do the same sort of thing if you have them set to shortest route (rather than the fastest). If going through a town centre saves 200 yards, it'll route you through there, even if it takes an hour longer than the A roads/motorway.

If you want to stop it 'panicking' at hold ups, just disable 'dynamic navigation', it should still warn you of potential hold ups, but it wont try and automatically route you around them. I think TMC works better on the continent than it does in the UK for some reason.

I tend to support the FFRR Nav with Navmii. Free app on the phone - complete maps get installed and doesn't need 3G unless you want live updates  Regards

When I have data connection I prefer to use Waze (Google owned these days) otherwise Sygic (with TomTom maps) on my Android gear.

To be fair, I used the FFRR Nav system for a 4000 km trip in Europe last year (UK, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands) and it did well up until I tried to get to the Hilton in La Defence in Paris, there it didn't get me to the hotel on the right "level". I found my way in the end anyway but then Tom Tom didn't either (another guy was heading to the same hotel and used a taxi driver to guide him the last bit ).

I wonder if a software update on your system helps. Maybe worth giving it a try  MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

i have a dvd based nav [with the latest disc] and have travelled abroad and i've had no problems ...with the nav, observing signs and common sense you should'nt suffer much...


on my recent trip tp the swiss alps i installed a cheap [£22] igo based 4.3'' nav unit basically for the over speed warnings and it seemed to mirror the FF's nav routing... ... - .- -.

Route Options are set for major roads and toll roads, there does not seem to be a motorway option. I have now turned off TMC. That should stop the annoying warnings for non existent holdups.

Sorry, i'm probably thinking of the Tomtom for the Avoid motorways setting, the principle is the same, so long as its not set to avoid major roads.

A map update will probably do it, it's not so much the map, but the software update that will come with it. I think i had a tomtom once, which was terrible almost like it was navigating while drunk, but a software update sobered it up.

The mapping itself should be fairly similar across all sat navs, there are only about 3 firms that supply the mapping data in Europe, Tomtom, HERE (used to be Navteq) and Google.

I have to say, having used the FF HDD nav quite a few times it is spot on including the presence of heavy traffic etc. We tour quite a bit with friends and they use TomTom. Its now a standing joke between us - they follow us as the TT would have sent us on a wild goose chase several times.

Haven't used the diversion function yet - i prefer to just sit in traffic to be honest.  405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus
