Cats are awesome. Used to race Darts and Hurricanes in my youth.
If my numbers came up I'd be looking at a Gunboat 55 and doing exactly the same as the OP Regards

Kind of hoping to do similar in a big MFV when retirement comes a knocking Pete... Too many drawbacks with wind for my liking... Love narrow boating (chill out time) and simply quite fancy scaling that up a fair few notches around the Med or similar in the winter months Thumbs Up

Miggit, most have electric winches and lots of buttons to press....

RR2008HSE, Yep they seem to be just a bit less reliable than an old FF so nothing new there... Don't fancy renting as you can't make it your own, charter spec cats are cheaper but the owners versions are far better I have a thought of buying a charter spec and converting it to our requirements...

Gaz, yes mate, how much?? and where is it??

Dixy, Only going for our winter, get it taken out for the hurricane season, no where in Europe is warm enough for me in winter, just going to use it as a floating hotel room, don't plan on sailing too much on a daily basis, pick an Island and stay there for a season then next year move to the next.... The one we are looking at doesn't have bunks and as I said above, it won't stay standard for long...

bebechoon, your brother is quiet right but he doesn't know me... nothing frightens me, I don't get flustered, I don't get stressed, but I do know my weaknesses... if I can't do it I ask someone who can, the waters in the Caribbean are the easiest in the world to sail, it might not be the ideal size to start with but I taught my two daughters to drive in a Range Rover and they are far more relaxed driving anything after that....

markdotreed and Criag, yep, I'll keep a G&T on ice for you....

I know this all sounds daft but after a surgeon has sat you down and given you a 50/50 chance of ending up in a wheelchair for the rest of you life your values change, I smile every morning I drag my aching limbs out of bed, life seems too short to plan to the finest degree and there isn't a dress rehearsal... I'd much rather regret making a decision than regret NOT making a decision.... As the man said........ "what's the worst that can happen" Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Also haven't finally decided if sail is the way to go.... when you can pick up something like this for only a few quid more than an L405, mind you it would cost about £3000 in fuel to get from Florida to Jamaica...!!!

Please keep posting your thoughts.... it all helps.... Thumbs Up Pete

Hi Pete, I have been follwoing this thread with interest - the only thing I would say is seasickness.

I have quite good sea legs, but my wife gets sea sick if the water in the bath is a bit wavy - so I am sure you have considered it, and it is something you get used to, but it does not take some people a lot of swell to feel uncomfortable. Howard

That's one reason to get a Cat, they are very stable and don't rock and roll so much, neither of us has had seasickness on boats before, we've been on a few so hopefully will be OK..

We have decided that we need to go and see some boats and see if I "fit" before we do much else so I'm just sorting some flights for three weeks in January to Florida...

Someone's going to have to look after my FF while we spend six months out there if this comes off, any takers...??? Pete
