Testing EGR cooler 2008 3.6TD V8

Hi
How can I test the EGR Cooler integrity, the engine is currently pressurising the coolant overflow bottle and loosing coolant with white smoke out the back.
Was advised blown head gasket, however another LR specialist advised to check the EGR Cooler as this can fail and produce very similar symptoms before writing off the engine.
I have removed the inlet and wiring so have access to both the EGR valves.
What is the best way of testing these, can I leave on the engine or need to remove to check? Would running the garden hose through the cooler have sufficient pressure?

Any thoughts / advice.

Cheers
