Question for you caravannists !

Hi

I have a new stablehand starting who wants to live on site and is happy with a caravan, I know diddly squat about them so hoping you could point me in the right direction.

Its needs to have all amenities i.e shower, loo, cooking but will never move from here, having looked on a few websites this afternoon, I am none the wiser, prices are variable to say the least. Would a 2 berth at £500 with all of the above be a waste of money.

I appreciate it is a subjective question but any help would be appreciated, for a single person with a dog

Thanks

It's an identical layout to a Swift that some friends of mine own.

They find the lack of a fixed bed a pain, but I'm sure your chap won't mind.

At that price, your biggest issue will be damp. I'd advise having a damp meter to hand and getting readings inside all the cupboards and cubby holes. Si. <This is my name.

I would agree it's all about damp issues . If it's a dry one it's probably a good one although it's probably not a dry one at that money .

yep damp is the biggest killer and will be horrible to live in a damp van, the showering amenities will be limited too at that price There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I'd look for a German caravan LMC, Hobby, etc you can tell them easy cos they've got the door on the drivers side if you were towing it Thumbs Up

this is an example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LMC-Luxus-730P-8...Sw~bFWOjh8

I've got a slightly older version of this and mine is still dry, and it's covered a lot of miles in it's time, and some very rough ground, as I've been using it for events and some of our campsites have been Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Excuse - Caravan virgin suggestion...but...

Can you not stick a dehumidifier in it for a week to sort the damp out.

Or is the damp a sign of a deeper issue with the van ie cracked seals somewhere due to age / flexing movement from towing etc. Howard

It depends whether you're prepared to write off the cost and have the ability to move it, but there are some very decent static caravans for reasonable money.

If your stable hand is likely to be there for a while, then it might be worth it

Would give much more space & be a nicer environment to live in.

As above, if you can live with a static they are much easier to live with. Bear in mind you will need mains drainage and water supply. Haulage isn't cheap so find one close.

If it has to be a towable thing, something like this. German or Swedish are wider and well made.

How much fun it would be living in a 16' caravan in the middle of winter in Scotland Big Cry

Don't be a tightwad and get the poor stablehand something decent to live in

They have the offer of one of the annexes in the house, bedroom, sitting room etc but prefer a caravan! Thumbs Up

The only issues with static caravans are the width and the length if you have bends to go around getting to site. Once your there they just need a flat place to sit, they do need drains, but this can be done with a septic tank, and you will need water and power.

Damp in a caravan is a killer, especially if it's an English one, they make the things out of ply wood and normally they fill the walls with rock wool........... water gets in.......... rock wool soaks it all up and slowly releases it rotting the structure as it goes Shocked A lot of older units have a 2 piece roof, looks a bit like an upturned boat, these can leak all along the edges, including the middle seam and are a real pain to fix if they are left for more than a few weeks.

Big tip, if you are looking at any prospective homes, gently prod the ceiling especially at the edges (in the cupboards) and around any sky lights, these are the most common failure points, and if the floor feels like it's cushioned I'd be worried Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
