Hi guys, new problem with my car the lower rear boot wont shut, or at least most of the time

i close it and it just falls back down again, like the latches arent closing onto the car

i cant see any obvious damage to the latches or the rods which they latch onto, have sprayed wd40 into the latches and on the rods but still no joy

it will close perfectly on about the 20th time of trying to open and close it! i have had to close the top part of the boot onto the bottom part to keep it shut on a couple of occasions.

is there a micro switch or something similar that is common to go wrong with them at all?

A good squirt of WD40 and work them manually a few times

when you press the button to open the lower can you hear the solenoid? kinda makes a 2 stage noise.

It could be that it is sticking and holding the latches in the open position, hence why neither side is working. would try and open the boot and try working the solenoid a few times by pressing the button, it may be a case that its gotten a bit sticky over time and isn't releasing properly. You may need to take the back off the lower boot and lube up the mechanism inside the boot.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's possible the latches aren't latching over the locking pins correctly.
If so you need to slacken the bolts holding the locking pins to the bodywork and move them a nominal distance rearwards towards the back of the car. The latches will then latch correctly.
I had this on one of mine, adjusted as above and has worked ever since.

the solenoid indeed does make the noises fine so i dont think its a problem there

i will tomorrow WD40 the latches again working them manually as advised, and then check the pins and move them back slightly as advised and hopefully will sort the niggling problem out!

Same happened to mine,went a couple of months and just did not work then just started working again ??that was quite a while ago and did it again the other week but worked after a sharp slam ??,am sure there is a reason but am not convinced on the answers above .

There is a small thin plastic slider (looks and feels a little like an emergency handle that lifts up) so, lower the tailgate and pull both plastic sliders upwards towards the top plastic bar that has the tailgate release button inside. There is an internal spring that should make them pop up when the latches release, if they are down then something has failed/stuck... Lifting them manually allows the latch to re-engage... Then close the tailgate and see if that allows it to close correctly? If it does? Then you will need to pull them up every time you open the lower tailgate, to enable it to close again... Not a permanent fix, but at least allows you to use the car whilst you sort out the issue/lube/free off etc etc etc

My tailgate wouldn't lock all of a sudden. No sign of an issue until it plainly just stopped locking. Managed to keep it engaged with the top gate to get home. Removed the 2 black lock mechanisms, be careful when you remove the locks after you have taken out the 2 bolts. There's a small square plastic part that engages with the locking mechanism. I managed to remove the plastic part from its axle/fixing point. No Biggie, just had to remove the bolt that holds the tail gate support cable, remove the mechanism on the tail gate that's behind the metal frame of the gate (once the door card was removed) re engage the little spring, reassemble and job done. A good clean out of the locking mechanism with brake cleaner and then lithium grease when dry and it's all fine now. 2012 L322 4.4 TDV8
