United States 2006 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Buckingham Blue
New (to me) L322, oxidized door handles

Hello, on Sunday, while shopping for a Jeep Grand Cherokee, I made an impulse buy of a 2006 L322 in Buckingham Blue. Vehicle has 123,000 miles, but has been meticulously maintained by our local dealership, (Boise Idaho).

I am an amateur mechanic, but enjoy researching and fixing/modifying things, usually involving my teenage son's XJ Cherokee. This RR is completely foreign to me, but I am going to begin researching and repairing the things on it that I think I can handle. I successfully opened the rear AC vents using a screwdriver last night for example.

So, here is my next project. Please, if this is the wrong message board to post things like this please tell me, and move this thread. I apologize in advance. I am going to have a million questions and I want to ask them in the appropriate venue. Thank you.

So, my vehicle has door handles that appear to be damaged from the sun and weather. Would it be appropriate for me to tape around them, and spray them with something like, Krylon Fushion in Matte black? Thanks for responses.

The simplest way is to put door handle covers on. I did this, it means you can colour code too if you want to.

Sweet! Thanks, but what's the backwards, cross between a cursive L and lower f looking thing next to the number 59 lol? Seriously, though, although I wouldn't have the satisfaction of doing the job myself, this would ultimately look better and take less time. I will look for them from a US website. Thank you.

Do you think it looks best to match your paint, or go with black?

Go with colour coded if you can aS the later cars had coded handles. Failing that grey.
Other than that anything but chrome Whistle There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yeah just read it. Probably give it a try. I can't find the door handles on Amazon or ebay (the US versions) in anything but chrome. But they are very cheap. I might be able to get the chrome ones. Scuff them up with some light sand paper, and then paint them before putting them on. Could be a easy and cheap solution.

Is it hard to take off the portion of the handles as described in the wiki?

Thank you.

Um... what's the point of buying covers and painting them when you might as well paint what you have...!!!

It's as easy to take the smaller part of the lock off as I stated, one rubber bung, one screw.... Thumbs Up Pete

Depending on the year of the XJ the Range Rover is a polar opposite. I came from a 1995 wrangler YJ.

I was thinking I could save some time, and save the risk of screwing up, and breaking through my tape, and marring the finish of my vehicle. That would bug me forever.

That being said, I am going to hopefully this weekend, follow your instructions, and refinish them. Hopefully I can find a similar colored paint at an parts store in Idaho. I was looking last night, looks like I need to try to match the side vents right? They look like they're about the same color as the handles are supposed to be.

Can you give me an idea how to tackle the chipping off of the gray/silver finish on the plastic on the interior of the vehicle?

Oh Lord, love my XJ. I can just beat the crap out of it. Has 271k miles and runs like a top. Easy to work on, parts are cheap. Very utilitarian vehicle. It's what my 16 year old drives to school and I may buy another. Where I live you can get one in decent shape for $1200-$2000. This L322 scares me to death. It's so complicated and intimidating compared to my primitive mechanic skills, and I know if something breaks it's going to be a big bill.

You can repaint or wrap the interior silver but you have to remove every last bit of the silver down to bare plastic as nothing sticks to it...

Some have just touched it in with various silver paints but it doesn't really work, you will always see it... Thumbs Up

if you use a piece of plastic around the handles like I showed, and tape it up, you will be fine...

There must be a body paint shop supplies somewhere near you that will make a rattle can of that colour... Thumbs Up Pete

It's easiest to spray paint the handles in place. Tape well around them and add paper/plastic to mask the doors. Then a little sanding with fine grit paper, a thin layer of primer, three-four thin layers of colour, then a layer of clear coat. This is done in a few hours. Let it harden for a couple of weeks before you buff and polish it. ----------

As per le25dse's quote. Did mine a few weeks ago & looks good,
Masked around handles first, as not to mark the doors. wet sanded with P800 wet & dry. Remove old masking, Thoroughly dry & de-grease handles, remask & paint.
I did each side seperately, just in case you need to get inside.

Good luck. Thumbs Up

As an electronics tech, the use of the term "colour coded" really jars. Colour codes mean the different colours mean different values, e.g., resistor colour codes, black = 0, brown = 1, red = 2, etc.

The handles can be colour matched. Ron B. VK2OTC
