Belt noise when cold

Hi guys,

New to the forum, been reading a lot over the past few weeks, very informative forum and wiki so very happy to be here!

I picked up my 2011 L322 4.4 TDV8 earlier in the week and have noticed a belt squealing noise when the engine is cold. It disappears when warmed up.
It is currently on 86k miles. It has had the auxiliary belt and tensioner changed at 66k miles.

I have a service booked in with my local specialist just after Christmas but I’m a bit hesitant to drive the short journey to and from work with it like this. (Around 7 miles each way). What is the likelihood of a failure occurring before I get it to the garage after Christmas? Is there anything I can check easily (I have a bit of mechanical knowledge but new to land rovers).

Needed belt, guides, bearings and tensioner doing to get rid of squeaks on mine 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Hi Steve. My car is the same age as yours and mines being doing it for the last 6 months. For peace of mind just make sure the belt is fully on the full width of the pulleys. If that's the case don't worry. Other members have reported the belt not being fully on the pulleys and that's the time to get it sorted pronto.

Thanks both for the quick responses. I will make sure the belt is correctly seated on the pulleys. Access is not too good though to get to it, will try my best!

Must be the cold weather as my 2011 tdv8 is just the same, only lasts a few minutes but it's now on the list to sort. Definitely a pulley or guide somewhere, need to do a bit of investigation to determine which one (before jumping in and replacing the lot).

As has been said above Steve, as long as the belt is running true on all the pulleys and guide rollers I wouldn't overly worry for now, just keep an eye on it once a week for peace of mind till you get it sorted 2011 Vogue SE Tdv8 FFRR

Mine did it, got some manol belt cleaner and gave it a squirt, stopped it for a bit.

If it’s running square on the tensioner and the idlers then I wouldn’t worry too much. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine does it a bit as well in the cold weather. Besides the embarrassment, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I had my water pump sorted etc, I just put it down in the garage having set it up too tight.

All Genuine. Rovertune did it all when it was in for its new secondary turbo. I also got them to change the top coolant hose as it was removed to do the tensioners etc. Preventative maintenance Whistle Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Top Tip!

Nip into the bathroom & 'borrow' 'er indoors' best talcum powder & give the belt a little 'puff'.
It's normally just moisture sitting on the belt hence it disappears when warm. As long as your belts etc are in good condition, this will work fine. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Get the alternator belt changed (and pulleys) as quickly as possible!

Mine did the same- on my birthday- and resulted in the alternator belt snapping and getting caught round the cam wheel. End result was numerous new hoses, a new front tire and the engine being stripped down to remove a piece of the belt which had pierced the cam cover.

Had this symptom on my 2011 Tdv8, there is a modified bracket to mount the alternator which is the official fix, had this done about 18 months ago with new tensioner & pulleys and of course both belts. Replaced the alternator as a precaution whilst it was apart with a Denso unit from advanced factors. 10,000 miles on and all still good.
