Gearbox oil

Ok here goes, please be kind I am new and I understand it's been done to death!

I have a 2002 L322 TD6 vogue auto is this oil for the gearbox any good?

MPM Premium Synthetic ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid FM+ LT71141 4L
£25.29
(£6.32/L)

Seems a lot cheaper than other oil so I suspect it's not

Your car has the GM 5L40-E auto gearbox and the correct oil is Texaco Texamatic ETL-7045E which is a Dexron III spec fluid. The Texaco stuff is not always easy to find - an alternative is Ravenol ATF Dexron IIIH. Ravenol is distributed by Britpart so any independant selling Britpart bits should be able to get it. Would also be worth talking to an oil expert like Opie oils (who is a sponsor on here) for other recommendations - it's possible you might be able to use a later spec Dexron IV fluid. Although the oil you linked to says it's suitable for Land Rover it looks like it might be for a Freelander. HTH.

Many thanks for the information.
I am totally confused on this gearbox oil, the hand book tells me filled for life!
Read on the forum must be Mobil oil now Texaco ( I was second officer on some of there tankers).
Will any Dexron 111 or above oil do?
Again many thanks

Do a search on this forum, there's lots of helpful information about gearbox oil changes, an example is in the WIKI: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic1259.html

Re 'filled for life' there's also lots of comment but essentially the auto is just a normal gearbox with drain plugs and filters so easily changed and well worth doing. I got my (Texaco) oil from Fleet Factors in Middlesborough, around £70 for 20 litres and the genuine Land Rover filter kit from Dan at Duckworths (also a sponsor on here.) Be aware that if you do a manual flush there will still be some oil left in the torque converter. Opinions vary as to whether it's worth doing a couple of manual flushes or having a power flush. I did a manual flush on mine and changed the filter myself, easy job to do, then took it to an independant (Quattro Autocare at Ricall, York) to have a power flush using their Wynn's Magafush system.

I got my 20 litre tub from Fleet too. Helpful lot in Immingham, not too far from you Wink

I've made contact with Colin, (Chinkoa) to borrow his fill plug and I intend on doing it a bit like the method described here: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post295156.html

Need to get the filter kit off Dan, Then I'll see about doing it first week of March I hope when my next decent off shift period is. Your welcome to come along and watch/assist if you like.

Rich

Many thanks for the advice now I am seeing the light.

The spannering is not a problem, I have built two kit cars still got the cobra, it was the oil that was confusing me but it seems that the texaco one is the one to use

Once again may thanks and good motoring keep safe

Your reference to the LT71141 fluid is for the petrol model ( ZF 5hp24 gearbox)
There's plenty to read on here regarding your diesel GM box.
