3.6 tdv8 gone bang

I bought a 56 plate 3.6 tdv8 vogue SE last year requiring a replacement engine which was duly supplied and fitted by Any Engines/Engine recon also known as NSV motors in Wolverhampton at a cost of over £5,000, lots of issues with the company at the time, trading standards were involved, whole saga was a nightmare.
It had new turbos, pistons crank, injectors checked, Injector pump rebuilt etc replacement EGR valves so should have been a long term solution..

The car has covered less likely 3,00 miles since the engine was fitted, the engine blew up on Friday night on the M6, so once again it requires a replacement engine.

Has anyone actually found an engine recon company who know what they are doing with these engines?

Over the years I have had lots of engines rebuilt successfully or had companies re-engine cars, with no issues.

The under lying issues with these 3.6 tdv8 is a lack of OEM support and parts for these engines, clearly Land Rover are well aware of the issues of these engines, they finally now support the 2.7 units but still do not support the 3.6's.

I have had enough, car is for sale someone else can take it on, or it will get broken. I am not up for yet another trading standards led fight over all this, life is too short.

My plans are to look around out with the Land Rover world or I might go 4.4, but for sure I have had enough of these 3.6's

Sorry to hear that Les, but that is the exact reason why I don't get involved with "reconditioned" engines, or non-OEM parts for critical items

There is/was a place in Paisley that was raided by the police + HMRC over something which sounds very, very similar

Is it actually a terminal failure?

Mike don't know what the initiating event was but, end result was no oil pressure and rattly like a bag of spanners.

second hand engine would be the way to go, if things had been different last time i would have gone that way as you know.

fine job for you to take on

Bit of both Les

Currently have 5 customers cars with me for work to be done next week, as well as my own, and the neighbours are less than chuffed with it, so something has to be done.
The unit is big enough to have a couple of ramps, store all those cars, all the parts I need and still have room to spare

Will likely have to cut back on the mobile side of things, bit will keep it going for as long as as I can Thumbs Up

Definitely a good move based on the amount of motors knocking about ! Can only be a good business move as well, Dundee's been crying out for a Landrover garage for years!

If this week is anything to go by, it'll be fine. There should have been another car, but they cancelled last minute as they needed it for towing at the weekend, and another being dropped off 1st thing tomorrow for a suspension fault

Never a dull day, at least Laughing

Ivor, Thanks for thought, but the underlying issue is you can't get decent OEM parts for these engines, to be honest if you could buy a Factory recon engine, dressed with heads and Turbo's I would have originally.

Sadly parts supply is the killer for these engines, its ironic that the likes or Turner or Motor and Turbo Diesel, who are recognised specialist in what they do and do all the early Landrover stuff have never got involved in remaking these engines.

In the Porsche world you have such companies at Hartech, who took the 996 Porsche engine addressed all the original failures and can now build you a bullet proof engine that will out last the car.

we need someone to do the same for these engines, I know of around 10 Range rovers that have all suffered engine failure and have been scrapped as a result, most with good owners and excellent service histories.

If you look at the D3 engines Landrover now support them and for a long time they did not, so hopefully longer term they will do the same with the 3.6 Tdv8. its a good engine when its running.

I agree that OEM parts should be made available for all the engines, couple of years ago i rebuilt my series 2a 2.25 desiel and OEM parts were easy to get for a 40 year old motor.
