Radar Blocked - IEB not available

I've got a problem with my MY14 4.4 which almost caused the car behind to run into me.

I put on cruise control yesterday and, a few seconds after activating it with no traffic in front, a driver intervention message came up and the car applied the brakes like the millennium falcon coming out of hyperspace. Only by stamping on the accelerator did the car behind avoid ploughing into me.

I now frequently get the radar blocked message and that the IEB is not available. Activating Cruise control does the above and the forward alert does not work.

Does anyone know where the radar sensor is and how to unblock it? I'd normally take it back to the dealer but options Re limited as I'm touring in Europe.

I believe the sensor is in the front bumper.

I've only had the problem in heavy snow, so I don't know what to do to clear it.

Thanks for the input.

It's going to be something for my dealer when I get home. I've done a bit more grubbing around and the sensor is behind the front bumper set into the slam panel - much too complicated for me to get at.

Resurrecting this thread to see if anyone's since found an answer to this. Happened (several times) on the journey home from picking up the my new FF yesterday. Obviously I could just take it back to the dealer, but its over 2 hours each way so I'd rather "unblock" it myself if its reasonably easily doable. Mike - MPx

Hi, were you driving home in snow/slush? If so, this is just the sensors getting covered and not being able to work properly as a result. As soon as everything on the front of your car melts, it should all start working again. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that @CubaLibre, but no, no snow or slush, indeed it was dry but very salty so the car is now several shades lighter than when I set off. (Note to self: get out there today in the cold to clean it off!)

It was odd in that it cleared itself several times. I was using cruise, and delighted to find that it was so simple to turn off adaptive simply by pressing the closer button. Then I'd get the radar blocked message and IEB not available. Then the cruise would switch off (despite not using the adaptive). For a short time I couldn't get cruise to work but then I'd find I could switch it on again and it worked for maybe another 20 mins before the next Radar Blocked message. Mike - MPx

accumulation of dirt, happens all the time on every car i've had the system on. Porsche actually charged me £173 to clear the fault last time it was in. they literally wiped it with a rag. Robbing barstewards..

Ok, thanks @Mr Tee. I can wipe with a rag as well as anyone Wink - as long as I can find what to wipe. I've read its behind the bumper. Do I have to remove the bumper or is there a way to get at it from above or underneath with less dismantling?? Mike - MPx

It’s doesn’t look like the bulbous one above. It’s a flat sensor on the bottom left side behind the black plastic lower part of the bumper. Found this from powerful skip to 13.06. When you wash the car it will clear the sensor you don’t need to take the bumper off ..

When my radar sensor got blocked by snow I just got a message on the dash saying the adaptive CC was not operational, but the car continued at the set speed, i.e. no braking at all. So I wonder whether the OP and others who got braking on a clear road have a sensor defect rather than just it being obscured by snow/salt/dirt. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Well I gave the car a good clean today. Its gorgeous Cool But I couldn't see/get at the radar box despite it being very clear where it is on that youtube clip (many thanks MrTee). I did remove the tow loop cover panel, but that didn't offer any better access other than for a bit more general cleaning. No direct access through any of the slots across the front of the car. Not at all sure that any of my cleaning will have done anything to help with the radar despite the car now being cleaner than a clean thing after spring cleaning. I guess @CS may have a point about a defect as it did come and go at random on the drive home which, as I said, was dry all the way. Grateful for any further thoughts. Mike - MPx

Well the car went back to the dealer today as I was properly fed up of the Radar being blocked for about 15 mins out of every half hour. Surprisingly to me, they didn't replace it. They said:

"Oh they all do that, there's a technical bulleting specifying a software update - it'll be fine now".

Well it was 2.5 hours home and I played with the cruise quite a bit, and as far as I can tell, they have indeed fixed the issue. No Blocked radar messages, no refusals to go into cruise, and no IEB not available messages. Completely different experience to on the way there.

Happy days! Mike - MPx

An update to this thread to say that the much hoped for efficacy of the software update didn't last long. Within a week the radar had reported as "blocked" and while it was very intermittent (and indeed reasonably infrequent at first), by the summer it was failing every journey. So finally managed to get it booked back in to the MD at the beginning of Oct, and this time they did replace the radar and reported that it "had failed" although that doesn't really explain why it worked sometimes. Anyway, I'm now a fortnight into having a new radar and no blocked messages yet - so AEB presumably working, and more importantly cruise is available whenever I want it - which is pretty much every time out. Yay! Mike - MPx
