Handbrake shoe pins

Hi all after such a horrendous noise from the rear while driving a stripped the brakes and found the pins were rattling around. The backing plate it goes into has rotten - is it a new backing plate job or is there a better way? What's the damage for a plate normally...

I know a common fix is little nuts, bolts and washers but they obviously have a time limit! Won't be long and you will have to replace again!

I had the same problem when I bought my car but the back shields came with the car. Rather than split the hub etc as it is a pretty big job to change, I got my father to cut them in half and make a little strap!

All I had to do was paint them, and cut down the small screw once fitted so it was clear of the brake disc!

Here is a picture... They were easy to fit just cleaned up the area with a wire brush and bolted them together top and bottom, and once the three bolts were in they are solid.

He got the idea from an American company that apparently you can buy them like this but with welded straps!

my old FF had the same problem.

Simple fix, costs only a few quid and is as good as factory.

mk3 ford fiesta brake shoe fitting kit. They use slightly longer pins but also come with a seprate button to hold them instead of locking into the backing plate Current

To revive an old thread.
We have just had our rear handbrake shoes replaced on our 2003 L322. The pins had rotted and the shoes were grinding on the drums on the nearside.
I had printed off the images of cutting the backplates from this thread which is what he did, fitted the new brakes, drums, backplates etc (all OEM parts) and rewelded the backplates and has done a great job.
Saved all the grief (and expense) of removing the hub and driveshafts and the job was done in a day!

He now just has to replaced the handbrake cable!

Stan, would this thread be worth putting in the Wiki as a work-around for replacing the backplates, because it works!!

Thanks

Yes I saw some on ebay too but my parts shop couldnt cross ref a euro car parts number.
In the end what they let me do is look at all there fitting kits in there stores to shut me up.’

I was able to find a suitable solution Smile

However ive had a nightmare getting this rear disc over the brake shoes, the adjuster is wound all the way in and ive wiggled them around but I just cant get the disc over the shoes.
so currently ive just ledt it with no handbrake shoes on the left hand side until I figure it out.

Its dark n cold outside now so ill re-tackle this again
