Think you have the belt on wrong, the tensioner is at full tension when at rest, you wind it back to fit the belt then release it and it tensions the belt... |

Thank you Ding, I've got that picture- I'm trying to figure out how the tensioner behaves and if I need to get a new one.

Aaaar.. so you've undone it, you have to "recharge" it then, virtually impossible to describe... see these....

Those are the pages I've been working off buddy, I've undone everything but when I go to do the refit there is tons of play when I turn the 17mm anti clockwise - is the hydraulic spring meant to bounce back/provide resistance?

Got that - but I get to the limit of the groove for the blue bolt & it therefore doesn't tighten the belt? |

You have the belt routed wrong then, or it's the wrong belt.... |

Do a sniff test to see if there are exhaust gases in the coolant that will tell you if the head gasket has gone - you can buy the kit on fleabay or go to a local garage. I had a similar thing on a p38 and it was the heater matrix drawing air into the system hope this help a bit |
