Rear screen edging trim?

My 2011 RR has a rubberised trim down each side of the rear screen glass. One side has badly corroded and gone white (as though water has got underneath the rubber and corroded the aluminium inside). So i have removed both sides

Is there any reason that this trim is fitted other than just cosmetic, and will it hurt anything to remove them?

They are added to stop water falling in on the parcel shelf when it's been raining when opening the upper tailgate
