Reading thru Auto Express , they have reported that certain insurer's are saying that winter tyres are classified as a car's Modification and in some cases's have put people's insurance up by as nearly £230 ....

FFS, another non-story. They are getting as bad as the BBC!

As long as the "Winter" tyres you fit are the same size/manufacturer spec as listed in your handbook then they are not a modification.

This has come about by the theory that you could but completely inappropriate sized tyres on your 15" wheels.

I am sure it is just the case of fitting the recommended size (255/50 R20, 255/55 R19 etc) rather than manufacturer...

I meant the spec the manufacturer recommend not the manufacturer of the tyre. Sorry for my lack of clarity this morning  

Can you get the correct speed rating in a winter tyre for a SC? If not then I could see the insurer's point?

I seem to recall that, when I lived in Germany and it was law to switch to winter tyres, the garage put a sticker on your speedo warning you not to exceed 150kph.
