squeaky backrest

Hello. A few days ago, after a long trip, the driver's seat backrest started to squeak. Somewhere where the upper half folds. An old furniture sound, very irritating. Tried WD40, silicone, etc. but as it's on the inside, it's hard to reach. If I move forward the upper part, the squeak stops, but I really would love to stop it in any position. Thank you!

Sounds like one of those things you either just live with or get the Dealer to strip it down and detect the squeak. If you have warrnaty on your car, take it in, otherwise it will just annoy you forever more.

Well, as I'm out of warranty (119000km) I dismantled the seat myself, it proved to be a little difficult mostly because the upper backrest is modified from the one in RAVE. After a while I realized that after removing the lower backseat one must tilt the upper backseat completely forward, so that the backrest slides from the 2 channels that guide it. The noise was generated by one of the four springs, so I removed it, put some electrical cable insulation on the end, some grease and refitted it. Removing and refitting the spring is easy with a wire loop. I waited for a week before posting to be sure the noise is gone.

Wow, brave but cool!

Glad you fixed it and thanks for the picture. As more and more of the L322 shape RRs get older, more and more owners are going to start tinkering with them themselves. 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF

Thank you, it's really a 1 hour job, the seat doesn't need to be removed, just raised up all the way.
