Can any experienced wood workers offer advice on buying a Router please- The main use will be for fitting kitchen worktops.

I'm not a joiner, but in the past I've always fitted our own kitchens, then called in a pro for the worktops. This time I'd like to have a go at the worktops myself.

I was looking at the Dewalt 625. Would this be a reasonable mid range option ?

If the life expectancy is a single kitchen, then I'd think most would be OK with a decent blade. I've managed ok with a crappy old Black & Decker - you just have to take your time with shallower cuts.

I've just done my first granite worktop

We had ours fitted professionally many years ago and they have been great - so we bought a 2nd hand set of worktops off eBay for my sons kitchen - had to do some trimming to size and a little polishing but I'm pleased with the results.

In my experience any router will do the job... however if you want to make life easy then I would suggest that you look for a 1/2" collet version... I have used DeWalt.. fantastic if your fitting worktops for a living.. I have also used a cheap chinese thing, think it was preformance power or something like, bit basic but did the job well..

Soft start is a very good feature on a large router... remember using a Makita in the early 80's and you had to hang on for dear life on startup

You can get cutter sets from toolstation from £15

The biggest advantage with a 1/2" router is it can do a cut in one pass But I would recommend that you do several so it's not too stressed and the laminate isn't chipped.. and that's assuming that your cutting laminate worktops... if your doing composite worktops (corian etc) you'll need a diamond cutter, and a router around 2000 watts is a real advantage

Just make sure that they take guide bushes  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

This is a slightly less agricultural router.. GMC are silverline posh tools.. not that there is anything wrong with silverline.. their backup is good.. The GMC tools are better finished, and that one has a bit more umph!!

for doing one kitchen worktop then any old router will do, 1/2" collet and a decent straight blade. Make sure that you get a worktop jig then your life will be a lot easier!

Have a look at rental as well. The rates are not normally bad and the kit will be more heavy duty. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
