4.4 V8 Fuel Pump - Me thinks mines been out before!!

So, as it looks like my fuel pump has died, I decided to take it out today so I can check for broken wires in the vain hope I don't have to shell out for a new one.. No such luck.

Anyway, I tilted the rear seats, and pulled the carpet forward to expose the access hatches for the fuel pump and voila, I found a blank cover which I later figured out is to put in the hole in the tank when the pump is removed.

I'd take some photos but the tank is about 3/4 full of petrol and some got sloshed about from the pump housing so I'm taking no chances Rolling Eyes It didn't half make me very aware of metal spanners knocking off the body when there was a 5in hole into the fuel tank and a reek of petrol !!

I read a post somewhere that the inners of our fuel pumps are the same as in the X5, but the outer plastic bits are slightly different?

The BMW pump is under £100 where as the RR one is nearly 4 times as much.

Someone did a writeup on the DIY, but I cant find it on here or on RR.NET but it must have been one or t'uther.

Sorry I cant be of more help.

Dan

I pulled my failed fuel pump, removed the lower 1/3 section that housed the actual pump and replaced it with a pump from a BMW X5. They are the exact same pump just with different housings. I purchased a brand new x5 pump and housing from Napa for $200 usd. Took me 1.5 hrs to change it all out and install.

Ah.. thanks for that Dan - I'll have a rummage about for info.

Its an awkward git of a thing to get out of the tank as there is a pair of small pipes that go to the other side of the saddle tank and they need to come off the pump before it can be withdrawn. I didn't take the back seats out either and the carpet is thicki and tricky to get fully out of the way.

BTW: If anyone else has to do it, open the bloody boot before you disconnect the battery. You need to remove the spare wheel lifting straps to get the carpet out and its tricky to open the hatch in the floor without access through the boot. Neutral
