If you put it into N, rev a little, then let it idle, then put into R, does it work? If not, in R if you rev, does it CLUNK and go into reverse? |

Probably The cable from the gear selector to the gearbox needs lubricating.

In previous post he's talking about buying a TD6, so I'd assume it's the GM5L40E Cheese box until told different |
