Scuffed Sill Plates? Renovation could be your answer!!

Hi Folks,
My first proper post so be gentle with me !!
I guess it’s a common problem and I thought I would post the results for the benefit of you good people here.

The sill plates on my car were not looking great, especially the driver’s which was really scratched with some quite deep scratches, the others were not quite as bad but still not as we would like ‘em, all pretty scuffed. Sorry no “before” photos I was too keen to get them sent off and forgot to photograph them.

I priced up new ones, and when I came to… I recalled they were around the £400 mark for the set.
After a lot of phoning about I managed to find a company that does the bright anodising commonly found on bathroom fittings. Be careful here because there is normal anodising which looks ok but to match the “polished alloy” look of the interior (07MY) you have to go for the bright finish and it’s not that commonly done commercially.

I will say they look very good indeed but, due to the tread shape and pre-condition they’re not perfect but . I have tried to capture the imperfections on the close up photo below,(hopefully the images have worked..otherwise would someone re-align me on the correct method please) these are almost entirely confined to the worst condition, drivers plate. The problem being presumably salt had got onto the plate and it had suffered from pitting corrosion, so no amount of polishing would get it out.

I have come across this before doing other projects in alloy and its just one of those things. The pitting was then exacerbated by the final brightening process which if I recall was 3 types of acid, sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric or something like that all at 100 deg. C…nice!

For me, I’m well chuffed especially for the money, which was very reasonable and good service too. They look great in place and you have to REALLY look to see the tiny marks.

Not too sure of the site etiquette for advertising companies but if there is any interest I’ll post their details otherwise I’m happy to PM.

Cheers Bruce

Jay Boy

The shine matches the rest of the brightwork in my car. When I sent them I asked them to match the shine of the original or better. Interestingly he did offer different "gloss level" if you get my meaning so you can have what you want...which is nice! ...Always time for a brew !!
