I'm tempted to buy this dash cam, but could use your help...

I've just received an email from Halfords, trying to sell this new (to me) type of dash cam:

http://www.halfords.com/technology/dash-ca...tsid:71018|cgn:August2017_2018|kw:WK22TechOffersActive

It look like it could be a good idea Thumbs Up

Before I go and look at one tomorrow, please would someone with a L405 let me know if there is anything, like a sensor, or black overprinting, on the glass that would obscure the camera lens' view of the road?

Thanks in advance.

I have a transtec 520 for my 405, which has front and rear facing cameras all in one unit, the one you have shown, would have to stick onto the existing mirror, with the new larger mirror, not sure how that would work, unless you offset. Mine is a separate unit away from the mirror, the cabelling I need to get organised!

You could always purchase and take back,or take the car to Halfords and get one of the team to help and see which suits your car an needs the best. I used to have some nextbase DVD screens and always found the quality of there products really good.

I would never drive without a Dashcam, especially with so many ..... unique ( Whistle ) drivers out there, I hope there is footage somewhere of the accident that was on the M1 yesterday, where 8 people died, therefore those responsible are healed account, from the news one of the lorry drivers was over the drink drive limit Shocked , when in charge of a vehicle that size !!

RIP those that passed away, thoughts with their family and friends and recovery for those that are in hospital

Watching with interest as FF doesn't have dash cam...

Also be interested how you get on if you use Halfords fitting service, one of the big things putting me off is the thought of some pimply youth putting his grubby paws over my ivory interior and screwing it up generally....

Thanks for the replies chaps, but I don't have my 405 yet, so I'd be grateful if you could nip out and have a look and see if there is anything just in front of where the lens would be (passenger side of rear view mirror) so that, if I get it, I can be sure that it will work in the new car Thumbs Up

I won't be letting a pimply oik from Halfords anywhere near it Laughing

I cant find "transtec 520" on Google; are you able to provide a link please?

Ok, picture of windscreen taken - hopefully this will give you enough detail but let me know if not.

There doesn't seem to be anything in front of the mirror to block the view - however there is a sensor or camera on the drivers side of the mirror.

Just as a thought, I've got the solar option too and I don't know if the coating might affect the ability of the dashcam to see stuff. The reason I question it is because - although not visible on the picture - to either side of the black section at the top of the screen is a section about 3 inches by 2 inches which is clear - and I think where you'd put toll tags and so on. This suggests to me that the coating might hinder things being read electronically form the outside and don't know what affect it might have on things "looking out"

@ Stan: This one is new to the market, so we're at the bleeding edge here Very Happy

@ FW: Thanks, that's just what I needed Thumbs Up Mine won't be the solar attenuating type, so I'll be okay there.

Yep this is the one I have - I think brain not fully in gear after staying up to watch the fight, early hours of this morning!

The solar glass for those that have, affects things like gps satellite pickup , e.g. for tomtoms etc, which could also affect the dashcash and ability to give map location of journeys - will need to check, will also check on the forum as per Stan suggestion

I bought it yesterday and although I hadn't set the sat nav up, or even plugged it in, I fitted the mirror for the drive home.

First impression was that it was no where near as bulky as I feared, it looked very smart and more expensive than it has any right to at the price and was very stable (i.e. It didn't wobble in the slightest). So far, so good.

Then came the Achilles' heal - the mirror quality. The reflective material had the sort of slightly wavey appearance that you expect of something trying to be a mirror, but failing because it's not made of glass. Worse than that, the reflection gave the effect of having double vision - an affect that went away by looking in it with one eye closed.

It's a great idea and I'd have paid twice the price for one with decent glass!

As it is, it'll be going back to Halfords Sad
