As you and Stacker say Jim, it all depends on the state of the suspension.
If you get ASU bong and ride height stays where it is, you should be good to go
(if away from home and you get ASU, and you have an IIDTool or similar, read the faults but do not reset/clear, as you may well find yourself on the bump stops, with a long way to get home!)
If you get ASU bong and you are on the bump stops, take it easy, short trips, slowly, avoiding bumps and potholes. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember
