Look what happened when...

..I took my Sept '17 FFRR off road today and engaged a special program AND low range:

Censored brilliant! Thumbs Up No one told me it would do that (so it was a really nice surprise) and it certainly didn't do it on the new FFRR that I drove on an LRE day as recently as Easter 2017

It's great, it doesn't just swap from one state to the other, it's a fully animated process as it does it Cool It even does it differently for each of the different instrument designs that you can choose from...


PS: Now that it's nearly run in, I gradually let it off the leash a little today and ventured between 2,800 and about 3,800 rpm for the first time and boy, does it make a nice noise. And it shifts pretty quickly too! Very Happy I love this engine, even if I'll pay for it at the pump!! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Actually, this may not be obvious what I found such a simple and cool idea - the way the speedo is re-calibrated to work more effectively with low range, while both the speedo and tacho make space for the 4x4 information.

The speedo, which is now perfect for low speed work, topping out at 60mph.

If the mud and wet grass wasn’t enough to stop me from reaching 60, then the gearing certainly would! It would probably top out at about 50! Rolling Eyes

Out of curiousity, how many people here actually use their low range? I was surprised when I heard several people on the D4 forum argue that Terrain Response, an automatic gearbox and HDC have rendered low range obsolete.

If moving heavy trailers about or in extreme off road use then Low Box is essential - but then I use the Defender for most of that. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Having overheated my brakes on HDC coming down a mountain because I didn't engage Low Range, it is definitely not obsolete!

Did some serious off-roading in my Disco a few years ago. Convoy was all Land Rovers except for one Dodge Ram pickup (automatic, huge V8 diesel). Driver kept it in high range during a long, slow climb on a steep mountain road. He overheated the transmission. His giant V8 was fine, but it doesn’t move without a transmission. Nothing in low range had any problems. I like to use low range for any driving where I’m needing a good bit of torque and I’m driving for long periods at a very slow speed.
