I think you just need to get in writing that your warranty covers this possibility of failure .

Throughout the post it's referred to as - L405 3.0 SDV6... I thought the L405 was fitted with... 3.0 TDV6 (258PS)...

In 2 places I referred to both the TDv6 and the SDV6 Jack, albeit the thread titles correctly quoted TDv6. I've changed my 2 errors Embarassed

Thumbs Up

Get yourself down there Leasky Thumbs Up

Thanks for clearing that part up Pld118.

Now for the second daft question.... Are the TDV6 and SDV6 crankshafts/bearing the same? Am I correct in thinking the main difference between the two variants are the turbos and mapping?

I suppose what I'm getting at is are the problems the RRS and Disco owners are experiencing the same crankshaft/bearings as the TDV6 fitted to the FF.

I remember the 3.6TDV8 fitted to the L322 FF was strong however the same engine experienced problems when fitted to the L320 RRS.

Daft questions over for the day, thanks.

I have just left my Land Rover dealer and they have confirmed that the extended Land Rover warranty does not cover this issue but Land Rover will if the vehicle is not over 5 years old , does not have sketchy service history and has not done mega miles . For me this is fine but not for everyone maybe . They also said , although rare they see it mainly on discos but that maybe because there are so many of them down here.

Shocked a few too many variables there...... ‘sketchy’ could mean a thing from missing services, to simply not a main dealer. Similarly, how does one define ‘mega’ miles ?

I agree Alistair , I expect the variables will depend on how many new engines Land Rover have to pay out on . So I suppose if it’s going to happen to someone sooner would be better than later .

Our selling dealer has today verbally advised that this issue is not the subject of a bulletin rather a service update:

Title SSM72928 - Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine

Global reference SSM72928

There's a copy on Disco3 - it doesn't really answer your question though......

The two noteworthy parts from that link to get clarity on are what is meant by:

A new procedure has been implemented to ensure more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and...

For any suspected crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure, please contact your local FRED or Dealer Technical Support Team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure...

Seems like there's an overall consensus

There are issues with the engine - even if relatively low % of vehicles impacted

Warranty isn't covering it

LR will do something - but will very much depend on circumstances - age, mileage, service history plus who knows what else

All the bulletin really says is that they acknowledge there's an issue & they want to handle it better - though the cynic in me says they want to handle it centrally rather than better Whistle

Seems like a bit of a roll of the dice - but probably no 'worse' than the TD6 gearbox, or 3.6 TDV8 turbos......

Just checked TOPIX again and this issue is definitely listed under the subheading of Bulletin. Confusion reigns...
