Apple licensing regs. For some reason it has to be sold as an 'extra' as opposed to being part of the vehicle as I understand it, otherwise the iPod functionality side of the media system would need to be licensed.

Most dealers probably wouldn't have listed it separately, granted!!

Exactly the point....... A wire is not subject to licensing. The 'vehicle' cannot function as an iPod device in standard form, it only has 'capability', hence the requirement for an optional extra.

This was explained at launch, and I have no idea why they would take the time to highlight it if it was not correct. Anyway, it comes with a lead which was ordered as an option.

Ahem, actually crApple have been trying to license the socket, with some degree of success. Ever noticed how some of the aftermarket IPOD leads don't charge them? Those are the ones who wouldn't pay crApple for the privilege of being able to. There was even mention of a hardware encryption chip on the socket at one point. Nice touch for those of us with 40 quid audiophile cables.

Do a google on it - you will be amazed at all the underhand stuff that Jobs and his merry band of tossers get up to.

Ahhh, thought Apple had finally managed the unthinkable and got a standard termination registered under some sort of 'Apple-Item'.

I bloody hate apple & their insistence of ensuring their products do not confirm or adhere to any global standard....& then they have the gall to let big Bill bail them out when they're all but washed up !!!!....having said this I do use an iPhone but it took my peers years of persuading to move from a smartphone.

Wish I had some of their marketing guys though
