What size for winter wheels / tyres

Since there are a few other posts on snow, it got me wondering about this.

To start with I have an L322 running on its standard AB black wheels.

Is it better to go for something smaller than 20" wheels, or stick with that size.

What's the best 50/50 or winter tyre ?
I have seen general grabber AT, conti, Michelin, and cooper.

Oh, and while I'm at it, are the ET offsets the same for the FFRR, RRS, and Evoque ?
We also have an Evoque, so would be handy to know Wink

Cheers
John.
Ps, the FFRR has done well the last few days, but I have no doubt it would be better on winter or AT tyres. Too many toys, not enough time

Ireland 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Zermatt Silver

Just fitted General Grabber AT3's to my FFRR.
255/55/20 and I can recommend them.
All season with snow flake mark and all terrain.
Been out playing in the snow yoday without any problems. The ride is better than the Pirellis and just as quiet. They give the Fatty a purposeful look.
Very pleased. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

I went for Cooper AT3 in 285/50/20 for winter and the shooting season. The rest of the year I am running 275/40/22 on Turbines 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Which is best - a dedicated tyre or a compromise ? I think you know the answer Whistle

Whether it’s worthwhile in the U.K. is a much more subjective question. I’ve run winter and summer tyres on my cars for many years, I’d always rather spend the money and know I have the best available, but understand that many people won’t and a good all season tyre isn’t a bad compromise.

Smaller wheels won’t buy you anything - except a better outcome if you skid into a kerb

Grabbers look Cool but IMHO they aren’t as good on tarmac as a regular road tyre, so it depends what kind of driving you mostly do.

On 20’s I ran Vred’s and on my 22’s I run winter conti’s - both have been really good Thumbs Up

Winter you need narrow tyres to cut through rain, snow, mud etc.

Wide tyres are for dry tarmac.

/\ is the theory, but you have to go a good bit narrower to make a material difference - then they both look Censored and your insurance com-any are likely to have something to say.

IMHO, its ok for an F1 or rally car, but in the real world, just stick with what you have as skinny tyres are way worse in the dry, or even the damp.....

I put 235/65/19 pirellis. They are 1 inch taller which makes the speedo sync with the GPS speed. They are about 1 inch narrower. This from 255/45/19. Much better in rain/snow and deep snow. Closeout at $56 USD was the real selling point.

Indeed.

235s will be far better in the mud / snow / wet than 285s.

Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R19 here, have been fine in snow, reasonable on ice, but full winters will be better. Have heard good reports of Pirelli Scorpion winter but not used myself, also Vredestein Wintrax. Duratracs OK off road and not too noisy/compromised on road. But limited to 100mph approval. There is also a 255/55R20 which would work on 20" wheels, including on 405s, again speed approval issue applies, I tell my insurers, no problems there so far.

NB ye cannae change the laws of physics, drifts the height of the car today beside A68, no tyre will get you through that, and near home icy channels on road led me towards a parked car, had to reverse and dig out the channelled area before proceeding. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thanks guys.

I will look out for a spare set of 20s then.

For the conditions we usually get around here I am sure winter tyres would be great. Too many toys, not enough time

I've had a set of Wintrac Extremes on an old set of 19" wheels from the 4.4 petrol FF days. They've not been needed every year, but when they are (like this year) there's nothing quite like a FF on winters for feeling confident about getting any place you need to go. Dodging numpties is still a problem and clearly doing only 30mph as I was tonight was way too slow for the guy 6 feet behind me in his cart sprung pickup - but luckily for both of us he turned off my route before hitting me! Roads around here are just a couple of inches deep in compacted snow/ice with high snow banks where the ploughs have thrown the rest. No problem for the FF up or downhill...very impressive. Mike - MPx

Winter tyres are compulsory here

After several different winter tyres over last 10 years - my favorites are Continental Winter Contact TS 850 P SUV - on standard westie wheels. Feels so planted, stops well on snow, compacted ice and in wet.
The Michelin Latitude Alpins on the D2 were good - but these contis are excellent. Also have contis on wifes polo and it has been faultless apart from a little clogging at -18 and too slow speed. But any tyre will get that as the snow and ice gets very sticky at that temp. So does my metal gate to my fingers! Series 2a LWB Hardtop - ex British Aerospace that was then used in an armed robbery! not by me!
2 door V8 1979 Range Rover
A slight Subaru blip..
110 County 200tdi
R reg 300 tdi Discovery Aviemore - gone to a local enthusiast to be resurrected in Transylvania
2003 TD5 Discovery2 - now sold
and the 2 wheeled Range Rover - BMW R 1150GSA

and finally the big lady of my dreams... 2012 Westminster - gives me a smile every morning
