what's wrong with a dipstick?

Excuse me while I have a rant Evil or Very Mad
Now I love my L405 and it's proved to be a reliable, comfortable, swift and cosseting vehicle but one thing really p***es me off and that's the electronic dipstick. To start with you need to read it 10 mins after stopping the car with a warm engine and on a level surface (I can't think of any situation when this happens "naturally" so I have to set an alarm after stopping to remind me if I want to check my oil level). This I did with varying success until earlier this year when I kept getting the "unavailable" message.
I mentioned this to my garage when it was in for a service and they checked it out with their gadget and told me it needed a new sensor. These aren't too bad at£70 a pop but guess how long it takes it to fit one?
Go on guess.
OK I'll tell you- Land rover say 10 hours! but it's taken my garage 16 already!
The garage have been v kind and will honour the original quote for time.
Even so... what's wrong with a normal dipstick?

Rant over

Good grief, ten hours book time you say? That's what, £1000+ at main dealer rates?
Unless there's some technical reason, I agree that having an electronic dipstick is daft. But then, I think the same about electronic handbrakes, auto wipers, keyless entry and tyre pressure monitors. I am an old git though.
I suppose it's preparing us for the days of driverless cars!

Jon S,
Are you familiar with a handy little tip that works on the L322 4.4 tdV8 ?
It might be worth trying on your L405 when you get it back.

N. B.
It only works with the bonnet open.

When you get the not available message,
Press and hold the Cruise Control reset for 10 seconds and the oil level reading is restored.

10 hours is daft to change a sensor. You could remove and refit the engine in that time.

Hmm, I wonder if they are.... naaaahhh can't be surely Shocked Too many toys, not enough time

I am assuming that we are talking about a 4.4 tdV8 L405 ?
In which case the sensor is in the sump (oil pan).

It is easy to see how it is a 16hour job.
It must be the very first piece bolted into the sump.

Fwiw, the absence of a dipstick is effing stupid. I also hate gesture internal lamps etc etc. Another backwards and frustrating invention - I guess sensors are cheaper than a nice quality switch. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

That is absolutely ridiculous.

I can now see why it takes 10 plus hours to change. What a joke!

From the image and the RAVE description above, it looks to me the sensor is on the outside of the sump, not inside. Ron B. VK2OTC

P38,
I have looked again, and think you must be right, otherwise it wouldn’t have the rubber sealing ring ?
