computers - i hate the ******* things!

so, apart from being bloody useless with all things technical with cars you can add computers to the list

for the last week i've been getting a huge number of infections - run Malwarebytes and AVG but they were still getting through

and no, i've not been surfing porn sites (unless you include pistonheads Very Happy )

the worst one was 'virus VBS generic'

so being so bloody useless, i called in the local expert from the village computer shop

he 'fiddled about' and said he could not remove the VBS virus (despite it dating to 2007ish?)

took the 'box' away and wiped the hard drive (?) and reloaded everything

seems ok now and much faster as he added some more memory - only charged me £45 all in

Can I recommend Avast Antivirus. It actually works - unlike AVG, but is still free for home use.

We changed to it at work after big problems with Sophos. You can also disable sounds & notifications other than virus warnings so its "set and forget".

Malware antibites is good if you have problems, but isnt the sort of thing you need for every day use.

Yes you should get of AVG, it's a system resource hog and will clash with Avast and Windows Firewall.

A note on firewalls:

You do not need them if you connect to a router (either wired or wireless) as these have hardware firewalls built in which are MUCH more secure than a software firewall.

Windows firewall is absolutely fine as this protects outgoing comms' Avast also has a firewall of sorts, it prevents your PC sending anything it shouldnt, so if you do get a worm, it shouldnt be able to send all your data to someone.

Is it true that Mac's and Apple's kit is much less prone to virus's etc - I have recently become an Apple household - Mac27, MacBook Air for travelling, iPad and iPhone4 and have installed a virus guard onto the Mac and the Macbook Air but folks tell me now, it is unnecessary! 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Tim, yes you are correct. A mac is much less prone to a vrus as there aren't very many about that affect the unix system. There are a couple but not anything like the thousands out there for windows machines.

I am led to believe that UNIX is more secure than windows anyway but viruses are normally produced to affect the greatest percentage of pc users. So therefore most viruses are written for windows. 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior

Avast has a firewall, why would you need AVG?
Again, if you use a router then you have a HW firewall...
