Strictly speaking, 3 belts

Cambelt
HPFP belt
Aux belt

Whistle Thumbs Up

Aux belt needs removed to replace the front belt
Sounds like that's what is being quoted for, and no mention of the HPFP belt

The service advisors have no idea what is being quoted for. I’ve spoken to 5 of them now at different garages and not one of them has had a scooby doo what they’re on about.

I rang round various md’s and indy’s last year before I purchased the l405. Only because I owned a disco tdv6 many moons ago when they was quoting £1000 + for belt changes. At the time neither the md’s or indy’s had a clue how to price the job. It was as if the l405 was to new. Literally no one had a clue.
Now the l405’s are getting higher up in mileage I’ve noticed more and more posts about it. The cam belt really is no different on the 3.0 l405 than it was on the older tdv6’s so that price should be no different. I honestly think anyone mechanically minded could do this diy. The rear belt on the other hand being timed would be a whole new story.

I shouldn’t feel like it. But Unless you know the garage well, how would you ever know if this work had been done? I did get in contact with an Indy last year that actually sounded like they knew what they was talking about. Also said they hadn’t done a belt change on the new 3.0 but seemed to know there stuff. From memory the price was around £700 for both belts.

Timing the fuel pump belt is well documented in the workshop manual and less technically challenging than changing the camshaft belt which if mistimed can damage valves and pistons rather than just the fuel pump not correctly providing fuel. I found that access on a 3.0 D4 to get the fuel pump timing correct was difficult but checking that the timing was correct before activating the tensioner was not difficult - I did it over and over by feel until I managed to get the timing correct.

Had a telephone quote from an independent LR Specialist today: £985 incl VAT

That price was for genuine LR parts - he said price includes fan belt, cam belt, fuel pump belt, idle pulleys and coolant as they tend to replace the coolant whislt doing it (if I've remembered it all correctly).

As mentioned, ours hasn't hit the replacement threshold yet despite what an LR MD Service Advisor said... but worth forward planning for, especially if that's a realistic price.

so is there locking tools used for rear belt? I’ve heard of people cutting the old belt around the middle to slip the new one on. How much shorter is the fuel pump belt?

There is a special tool required to lock to HPFP in its timed position, as well as the camshaft locking tool Thumbs Up

I’ve spoken to an LR independent specialist and about 4 LR main dealers for quotes. Most of the main dealer service advisors didn’t seem to know what they were taking about (didn’t explain at all well what the work would entail and had to go and ask when I mentioned a second belt).

The only person who volunteered changing 3 belts at once (the ones I mentioned in an earlier post) was the independent.

None of them mentioned changing an oil pump.

The specialist’s quote was dearer than the quotes offered by main dealers albeit he was very specific about what the work entailed. I’m not really sure what the going rate to change the 3 belts is at this time and am trying to get some clarity.

I’d rather get ours done by “a reputable independent” because I’ve little confidence in main dealers (for good reason over years experience) but... I’m wary because of the LR Extended Warranty and the fear of them trying to dodge a claim if something associated to the cam belt change goes awry in the future (£145.50/ month for so called “peace of mind”, therefore I’ve a right to be wary).

Oil pump isn't an issue on the 3.0 engines Thumbs Up

I've quoted L405/494 belts at £450 + VAT, for all 3 belts, using all OEM parts. Not sure how that compares to any other quotes you've had, but that's where I am

Provided the belt has been replaced by a VAT registered garage, using OEM quality parts, extended warranty should not* reject a claim Thumbs Up

* I'd have said cannot, but with warranty companies, you never know Rolling Eyes

Thanks Mikey,

The “LR warranty company” said the parts must be genuine LR so is that different to what you mean by OEM parts?

I ask because the specialist who quoted £985 started off quoting a price for a make that I think started with a letter D and which he said was exactly “the same make as LR” but then when I asked if it was LR branded (to comply with the warranty) he said he’d need to get me another price... and it ended up dearer at £985

Dayco, which are OEM, and exactly the same parts and quality you'd get from an LR dealer, minus the LR box (and price!)...

I've never heard of a warranty company stipulate that genuine LR parts must be fitted though, and we do work for LRA Approved (Car Care Plan) warranty, Warranty Direct, Scotsure etc...

If genuine LR parts MUST be fitted, that would increase the price somewhat, but not to £985...
