Fuel gauge issue ***FIXED***

A couple of months back after filling up the old girl, the fuel gauge didn’t go up. After a couple of starts it sprang to life and I put it down to a sticking float. A couple of weeks back it did the same. I had just under a quarter tank before filling and the needle kept going down as the fuel was used but it never registered the full tank. IID tool showed a fuel sender two fault that is persistent so I changed out both senders just to be sure. Fault is still present though.
Anybody had any similar experience ? No7 - 2003 V8 Vogue

Possibly the wires in the tank are starting to fall. Do a search on 'fuel gauge'. There is also a TSB on it - you'll find it in the threads from the search. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Yeah, I saw that TSB. I’ve changed both senders so I’m happy all connections are good. No7 - 2003 V8 Vogue

So despite me being confident all connection where good, I re-visited the tank and took it back to basics with a meter and sure enough I wasnt getting any resistance on sender 2.

For future reference sender two is the left hand sender as you are looking at the tank from the boot area. This is the single sender without the pump attached. I pulled it out of the tank and checked operation and traced the issue back to the connection onto the fuel pump unit. It turns out that the wire out of the back of the connection on the pump was broken. Visually it looked fine but a circuit test proved it to be no good. This was on a brand new original equipment part ! There was no easy way to solder so I ended up splicing with a choclote block and bingo - gauge is back to life.
Moral of the story is check the simple things first. I guess things where compounded by the fact that my original pump sender was broken, so I changed this and still had the problem ( not realising that the new one was already broken but in a different place )

Any way, those wishing to test their senders, I have attached a pin out of the plug on top of the right hand pump sender.
Thanks to Saint V8 for the picture which I robbed off his excellent write up on changing in tank pumps. Im sure he wont mind ...
