+1 for the Millau Viaduct and the associated visitor centre. It's a great visit and the road from Montepellier is very good (after you get off the E.

I did London -> Paris -> Lyon -> South of France -> Millau -> Versailles -> London and the whole family throughly enjoyed it

If you do anything along the E8 (the coastal motorway along the south), avoid Saturdays as that is change over day for the holiday lets and there are miles of traffic jams. Going to the south, I would suggest going through the mountains via Grenoble and Gap.

Depending on what appeals to you, I would suggest in the south of France to avoid staying in towns like Nice/Monaco and stick to the smaller villages like Frejus, St Aygulf, etc. We stayed in Sainte Maxime and did the drive to Monaco in about 45 minutes and back along the coastal road to Nice, etc

As Darren suggested, do Italy. It is beautiful  Paul

I'd either do a detour through the Loire valley or if you're set on Champagne (as in Liquid), go directly to Reims. We packed up and headed west one summer a couple of years ago because the weather here was bad and turned nice on the other side of the Voges Mnts just to the west. Coming from the Alsace, I pictured the top 2 pics. What we didn't know is that the Champagne (the region, not the Liquid) is also the 'great plains' of France. Wotta boring drive. And then we got to where they make the (Liquid) Champagne and it's only 1/4 th the size of the wine region in the Alsace and not as picturesque. Speaking of which, if you're set on wine/alc, then do a run up the 'Route du Vins' in the Alsace. They make good bubbly here too (Cremant). Much more to see and do than in the Champagne (Liquid and region)...

Driving your FFRR through the continent is awesome, I did it 2 summers ago, last winter for skiing and going again in 3 weeks time down through the Alps.
