Passed MOT today, but air con not working, probably due to little use, so popped up to Halfords for free test.

Empty. Then all fans and lights went off on the dash !! Fuse 12 (air conditioning had blown)

Replaced fuse started up, all lights and fans back on, but then fuse blew again.

Drove home, bonnet up, no belt on the AC pump !!

Tensioner runs free, but the grooved part of the AC pump does not turn, is seized. My spare AC pump (lucky me!) the grooved part turns freely.

So I am about to replace the pump...unless somebody stops me...  .

Well no-one stopped me so I got on with it.

Fortunate to have a spare second hand AC compressor, courtesy of Zebedee here on the forum, and i had kept the old AC drive belt from when I changed them out a year or so ago. Also not having the vicious fan and shroud fitted sped things up.

Followed RAVE for the most part, worked from above and below, the two allen nuts holding the gas pipes in place came undone OK, not too tight, and I worked the old compressor out and the new one in out towards the RHS wheelarch. Use a pair of small thin nosed pliers to pull of the electrical connector, it suddenly just pops off!

Trickest bit was mounting the replacement, working from above, you have to hold it in place with both hands, then with your third hand screw in the bolt at the back to start locating it, all doing this blind. Got it on my fourth go. I then temporarily fitted the top front bolt to locate the lower bolt properly.

Nearly forgot to plug in the electrics!

All back together, will test and regas tomorrow evening and report back .

Regassed and after some coaxing the clutch kicked in and I have air con again

Need another bottle of R134A though to finish the job ... .

on the MOT, its always a stressful time especially with the new regs.
Did you do the regassing or a garage Joe?.

I did it myself, although aware of the issues with air/impurities in the system due to not vacuuming out. For now, just needed to get it working again. Used the STP eazi chill bottle and gauge, had to push the pressure into the ALERT zone before the clutch kicked in, then the pressure dropped right back.

For proper DIY regassing, you can buy a set of manifold gauges and a vacuum pump, but you would need a proper setup to evacuate the system in the first place, if any gas left in there. .
