I finally picked up my fatty today and, being of a more vertically challenged persuasion, have a hankering to fitting some side steps. On looking at the sills, the outer ones have a plastic covering. I know there was a pack offering some enhancement there, but not sure if this is it and whether it would affect fitting side steps. Any help gratefully received.

There are holes pre drilled on the chassis to take side steps, the plastic covering is irrelevant and stays put.

It is a sensible thing to do, saves trouble with the seat bolster and seat plastic surround which get worn and damaged with the "sliding off"

Work the holes with a tap and apply plenty of grease on fitting, to ensure easy removal, the studs into both the side of the runner rail and the larger ones into the underbelly all have a propensity to rust and seize and snap on removal attempts .

Depending on the steps you're looking at, it may be cheaper to buy the IIDTool and lower the access height settings by 15mm or so, makes a massive difference. You've then got the tool for all the other stuff you'll definitely need it for in the long run!

and having just removed old OEM and replaced with 2nd hand OEM, then fitted the above, can say no real difference other than the front mudflap and connection to it being a bit different, however fitting and alignment perfect, no complaints, and from casual observation look the same as OEM. .

There are some really good deals on fleabay for new genuine deployables occasionally from JLR dealerships. Today there is one fewer. Spanners will be out soon.

Not sure how different your fitting will be, but NMJ wrote up his installation here

And the deployables are about half the price of the fixed LR ones which are about £800 Fitting is obviously more complicated on the deployables where the ECU and wiring have to be installed.
