Rusty 2015 L405!!!

My 38 month old L405 was recommended (by the JLR technician who carried out its first MOT) that if I was considering keeping the vehicle, it might be prudent to have the car wax oiled as some of the cast iron brackets were showing signs of surface rust. I sought a specialist in this area and took the RR to them to obtain a quote for the work. Once they got the vehicle on the lift, they called me out an I was amazed by what I saw and the state of the underside of the vehicle. The fuel tank shield was completely red and rust eaten. All four drive shafts were very badly corroded, pitted and red rusty, the prop shaft flange was the same. The front suspension lower arms suffered from surface rust as did all the iron brackets on the underside. The treatment specialist suggested he could treat the vehicle and eliminate the rust, but suggested I contact my JLR dealer as in his opinion this was a warranty claim and should be dealt with prior to his treatment being started. He wrote me a report and said he had never seen such a rusty 3 year old vehicle with only 20k miles! I returned to my dealer who inspected the vehicle again, took photos and said that they would pass on my comments to JLR warranty dept, but felt that as the RR was just outside it’s manufacture’s warranty, they would be uable to help? I pointed out I had their extended warranty, but didn’t seem optimistic! They also said that this corrosion was typical and as they were MOTing another L405 showed me underneath that. This also suffered from similar corrosion to mine. They advised me that there was nothing to worry about as the cast iron parts would not “rust through” and were perfectly serviceable! I await JLR official response, but am keen to gather thoughts of other owners re the above. I am gobsmacked that a £100k premium vehicle, serviced and MOTd from new by the dealer network can be in such a state after just 20k miles! AND I got such a reaction from the dealer. Advise would be gratefully received. Thanks. Sad

Hi
In the latest issue of Land Rover Owner Magazine, page 132-134, there is a workshop article about an L405 driveshaft replacement. The car doesn't look anywhere near as rusty as what you are experiencing, and it has 8 times as many miles as yours.

Do you have images of yours to compare? l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Do you have history of previous owners location. The car may well have had a life in a seaside environment or similar. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20
I swear you will never see anything like this ever again....watch it..drink it in.

indeed.

That said, these surface rusted parts will not perish anytime soon, so do not worry too much, but I do understand your frustration indeed! l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Thanks guys - my car is a single owner car (not ex JLR) in Satorini black and has spent ALL its life here in God’s own county Yorkshire! My wife’s 63 X6 looks like new underneath - not even the slightest sign of surface rust! HELP!!!!

I have seen brand new Range Rovers driven through waste deep salt / sea water by holidaymakers on several beaches. The rust might not be totally attributable to the vehicle - salt water is the absolute worst thing ever for a vehicle rust and also its electrics 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

But why should we have to do this? Whilst I appreciate that cast iron parts are unlikely to rust through in the near future, if the underbody was protected correctly this shouldn’t have to occur. And with an expensive vehicle in the circa £100K price area, the underside of the FFRR and RRS is quite visible from the rear so it’s somewhat disappointing to observe rust. Would Merc G Wagens look similar ?
Aware of the situation, I always wash the underside of the any RR vehicles I’ve owned with a strong hose if I’ve driven on salted roads. Other then that Waxoyl them from new especially Defenders which until manufacture ceased were minimally protected.

Just to update you - it’s been 3 weeks since taking car to dealer and reporting rot.
I chased with service manager after 10 days, he said he had not had a response from Land Rover and would chase them up. After again hearing nothing, rang dealer again on Friday AND today left messages for him to call me. (as in meeting) Still waiting for a call/official response to my complaint of rusty underside.
Great service eh!?
