Power steering failed L405

Just wondering if this is common?

Stopped at the traffic lights and the stop start engaged, when the lights changed to green I pulled away and had no power steering!!! managed to pull around the corner and stoped, I turned the car off and restarted, when restarted it was fine??

This happened last week and it has not happened since however I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this???

I am not a mechanic, but the first thing to check would be the fluid in the reservoir, check for any obvious fluid leaks, then book it in for a check over. My money would be on a small PS fluid leak. I have an old SL55 AMG which has a very slow leak somewhere in the suspension system which eventually causes the system to throw an error. Takes about 3 years for this to happen after a top up of fluid - maybe your PS fluid is doing the same?

I believe that it is electric but it may also have a oil reservoir?

Forgot to mention that I have fitted a Ghost immobiliser recently which connects into the Canbus, I wonder if this may have caused it?

btw it has not re-occured since. 2015 Range Rover VSE 4.4 SDV8. 1998 BMW 840 Sport, 2008 Aston Martin DB9

Sounds more like the vairiable pressure side of ut is playing up... i would be suprised if its the power steering system. It's possible there is a faulty solenoid valve that controls the pressure. When your under 18mph it's on full power I.e. easy to steer and park, as speed increases the pressure backs off to provide the driver a more positive feel on the road. My money is on some kind of sensor that controls it. I would get it plugged in and pull off a diagnostic fault code Thumbs Up

Exactly the same for me. Anyone else had this or did the OP ever find the reason?

Exactly same thing happened to me called out landrover assist and says it’s a common fault and points issue to earth cable connections in the boot which dealer checked and cleaned earth strap connections and re calibrated software and had no problem since 👍 Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where,s the f**king ceiling!!

Aljo - many thanks for the update. I’ll dig around and clean up the connections. It’s annoying but at least it’s a cheap "failure".

I think I’ve found it. It’s SSM 71278.

Issue:
A customer may report the vehicle steering feels heavy following an ECO stop start event, potentially accompanied by visual or audible warnings through the instrument pack. The following DTCs may also be logged:
Range Rover/ Range Rover Sport 1GMY only
EPAS module -
B1304-16: Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system circuit voltage below threshold.
Range Rover/ Range Rover Sport/ Range Rover Evoque/ Discovery Sport EPAS module -
B1304-16: Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system circuit voltage below threshold.
U3001-00: Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) system improper shutdown. These may be accompanied by:
U0001-87 I 88 High speed CAN bus invalid serial data received/ missing message. Chassis Control Module -
U0131-00 Chassis Control Module (CHCM) lost comms with PSCM.
U3003-62 Battery voltage signal compare failure.
U0420-68 CHCM invalid data received from PSCM.
B1304-04 Electronic Power Assisted Steering System - System Internal Failures

Cause:
This may be caused by:
Low battery voltage at PSCM particularly during engine crank.
Wiring harness issue (short I open circuit, high resistance).
High resistance at EPAS earth terminal (for L405/L494) G1D132 and or G4D178, (see attached diagram) or (for L550/L538) high resistance at G1D122A, G1D122B, G1D122AZ and G1D108.
Poor connection or pin set condition at connector number C11-G1.
