Good lord its happened again. I swear the Green Oval is a disease.

I got to talking to my other half the other week and she let slip that she missed having a Range Rover on fleet somewhere. However with no desire to sell the M5 that left a limited budget. I initially started looking at P38's again as a go to budget choice but these days its getting difficult to find something you might actually buy. Most of them these days are either totally wrecked, on coil springs, or worse a diesel! Or an utter fortune, a few years ago you could find something clean and reasonable for less than £1500 but not these days!

Perusing through eBay as you do I found a fairly local L322 HSE with Satnav/TV, quite poorly listed, I managed to have a quick look and it seemed to start and drive OK which is half the battle. Complete with a fresh MOT with just an advisory on a tyre, 2 owners and just 123k on the clock I got it for a very good price indeed. Not that much in the way of history but it does include its original bill of sale at just over £55,000!

And here she is! A few issues, but then it is a Range Rover, I will post those next.

So of course its a cheap Range Rover, it was going to have some issues.

The listing stated that the air suspension "occasionally" had the "air suspension inactive fault". This transpires to be rather more permanent than occasionally.

The listing stated the "passenger window is intermittent". This actually turned out to be the drivers window is totally inoperative. Actually very annoying, how else am I going to receive burgers without getting out of the car?

The listing stated a "small oil leak", to me its rather more a torrid flow probably from the oil filter housing.

It managed the 45 miles home though with little fuss and even reported 24mpg! Apart from a mile from home I was faced with a god awful racket which I sounded like it was being driven over a cattle grid every time the drivers side went over a bump. Realising this was a superficial bit of metal rattling it didn't worry me too much. I thought it would be an exhaust heat shield but it turned out to be a front brake dust shield which had clearly rusted through at some point in its previous history. The "repair" had been some rather skill-lessly applied GLUE!. So I chopped that into several bits and chucked it in the bin.

First job out of the way my attention has turned to the air suspension, I was praying that the fault recorded would be pressure static when filling and thankfully when faced with a diagnostic machine that was just what was reported. The compressor is currently sat on my desk awaiting to be rebuilt with a kit which arrived on Thursday. I'll try and do that tonight.

As for the window, it doesn't respond to the switch, or holding the unlock key down. I can also just hear a relay clicking when the switch is depressed which I think means the switch pack is OK and the issue is with the motor or simply a bad connection. Once the suspension is sorted I will take the door card off and have a look.


I have also ordered a full service kit for it and I think I will get a service kit for the gearbox as I doubt its ever been done. Booked in with the garage on the 21st.

My TD6 looked like that when I picked it up, though I had side steps.

I went to 19 inch wheels, but In hindsight the 18s are more comfortable and better if you are bouncing up kerbs or rocks.

I can’t go as mad with the 20s on my 4.4 TDV8.....

Looks tidy.

Cheers chaps yeah its not so bad from 10 paces. Obviously its 16 years old and for at least the last 9 years with its previous owner its been used as a bit of a dogs body.

I've not taken it up to mum and dads yet but it will make an interesting comparison with dads 12 plated westminster!

Nice very similar to mine I'm doing a full service next week and cam cover gaskets also have an intermittent starter motor so will be replacing that sooner than later

Ah looks good. Just refurbed and refitted the compressor tonight. I rather hopefully thought it would just cure it but will have to get the codes reset first. A job for tomorrow as I'll need to borrow a diagnostic machine.

This one has had the rocker cover gaskets done last year which is one less point to leak but it appears to be coming from the drivers side front of the engine somewhere but whilst I dont mind messing with electronics or simple stuff I cannot abide messing with oil unless I really have to so its one for a proper mechanic not an IT monkey like me. 2005 E60 M5

Another little update, it appears I have been successful in the compressor repair. I was hoping that I could borrow the snap on machine again but it turned out not to be available to early next week.

I turned my attention back to BMW's heavy involvement in the early L322 and figured that INPA should be able to communicate with it to some degree. After a bit of trial, even digging out another laptop and a fresh install if INPA I realised that user error was to blame. I had forgotten how old an L322 was and that the cable was in the wrong mode for an L322.

With everything in the correct mode I was able to interrogate it using an E53 and 2 axle air suspension. I cleared the fault and watched the compressor build the tank to 11.6bar and knock off and then the car gracefully reached an even standard ride height. (It was down as I'd jacked it up to remove the dust shield and it had been unable to self level since)

However, needs a headlamp bulb, another small job. 2005 E60 M5

It's been a while since I've added to this but as a summary:

Air suspension ended up in production mode which caused the lights to be off but no fault codes stored - got it out of production mode on the diagnostics and its been fine ever since so that's all good.

The seat valance exploded one day so I bought a second hand one and have replaced that today.

Since the last update its had the gearbox oil changed, engine oil, pollen and air filter, diff oils changes, front brakes replaced included a slightly seized caliper.

I managed to acquire 4 nearly new Continental cross contact tyres which I use on my navara to great effect and it has totally transformed the old girl from a noisy wandery old hector back into a luxury car. It originally had some ruined general grabbers which I think were of a horrific age. More than likely fitted by the first owner as I think the previous owner to me had run it on some 20's and had the original 18's sat in the shed for 9 years. Certainly the alloys have never been refurbished and are in remarkably good condition which supports this. I know this because the original "Borbet" and size text was still perfectly legible on the inside of the rim!

Drivers window still doesn't work, I have bought a new door card though to try and make a better example out of the new one and the existing one and when I get around to that I will try and see what is wrong with the window mechanism.

I have also ordered a new 100ah 900cca battery for it today as well as it only lasts around 8 days before needing a jump. I have checked and shes going to sleep as expected and staying asleep. The battery looks a few years old and as it had been laid up for 6 months before I bought it I assume the old battery is not holding much charge. 2005 E60 M5

Thanks! Yes it is absolutely as Land Rover intended to be honest which is quite nice. Obviously its picked up a reasonable amount of wear and tear over the years but it is quite original. I do have the original bill of sale as well. I washed it the other week!

This was my first FFRR, albeit a 2002 td6 hse, best one I’ve ever owned. 7 years old and Not one thing went wrong in nearly 3 years.

Thanks that's a nice looking example.

Whilst I would like to hang on to it I feel its days with me are numbered. I blow a bit hot and cold with this one for some reason, I'm pretty sure its because its not as nice as my old supercharged (which is understandable as its worth dramatically less).

Also it is an utter indulgence to have it sat there as a 4th vehicle. 2005 E60 M5

Hmm, I've just registered as this exact car has come up on my radar. I'm tempted to know a little more about it, but it's currently for sale near me, from some sort of amateur dealer. Quite cheap and from the history, perhaps worth a punt
