New wheel nuts

I have just replaced the OEM wheel nuts with these stainless steel ones from Wrington Engineering. Binned the locking nuts at the same time.

I cannot believe how crap the original ones are. All were so swollen I had to use a 23mm socket not 22mm to get them off. I couldnt even hammer a 22mm one on.

I can see this being an expensive hobby Rolling with laughter

They are the polished ones.

I was worried about ever being able to get some of the old ones off if I left them much longer, they were in such a state. You can get new OEM sets for about £80 but I assume they will go the same way after a while so I pulled the trigger on the Wrington ones.

I’ve just bought 20 original Land Rover ones for £70.50. And the last ones lasted 7 years. I do t think I’m going to keep ‘Old Trusty’ long enough to justify £190 Very Happy 2010 TDV8 3.6 Galway Green

I hear you. I have both 22mm and 23mm 6-point hex sockets for this very reason.

Do they actually make 23mm capped wheel lug nuts for the RR? Sometimes I'm convinced that I have 23mm nuts on some of the wheels. 2010 RR SC

i agree the LR ones do swell and are difficult to remove but on my westie i've only replaced 3 in 2 1/2 years of ownership..

Let us know how you get on with them. They certainly look great.

When my WM nuts were swollen I asked about stainless and the foreman at the dealer warned me against them on the basis that stainless against the alloy of the wheel would be worse for galvanic corrosion. That seemed counter-intuitive, but there did seem some support for it online (US construction industry) and looking at the wheels the corrosion marks were on the outside of where the (standard) nuts met the wheels, which might be due to that being where the stainless cover is, or it might be just where the nuts scrape the wheel slightly when they are tightened.

At the tyre fitters I was told that air tools are worse for causing nut swell (do they blow moisture under them?) and so I ask that only hand tools are used on my cars.

I was able to get new nuts ( a full set of 16) under warranty (WM then just under 3yo) so I didn't need to make the choice. The replacement nuts were still fine at trade-in at about 4 1/2 yo. Only Range Rovers since 1988

The chrome tops split on 3 of the nuts I removed and i could only get a 22mm socket on one other, so Im guessing they are all on their way out so I was happy to change them all.

out of curiosity I've just cut the stainless tops of some old ones (original) which had swelled and here's a picture of a few.

the insides are not corroded but a 6 sided socket wouldn't go on due to the flats of the stainless cover part being swollen and no longer flat.

like most folk I had assumed that corrosion of the body had forced the flats of the tops outwards but now think that these ones were deformed by the torque of tightening them which may have a tendency to twist the top relative to the body resulting in it's distortion. looks like a 12 sided socket would still go on them however but if my hypothesis is correct, a 12 sided socket would likely result in this distortion earlier than using a 6 sided one.

i now have a set of high quality m14 x 1.5 stud extenders!

Just had to purchase a 23mm socket to remove my wheel nuts. I have had the car for 21 months without removing the wheels, and have also had to destroy 2 of the nut covers to get to the steel 'nut' underneath. Also destroyed a Halfords extension wrench in the process.

It seems a maintenance schedule for these wheel nuts needs implementing in my routines, I believe the 140Nm/103Ft/lbs torque setting is also not adhered to in certain garages who use Air tools to remove/fit wheel nuts.

My other vehicles have never suffered from such problems
