Just Passed MOT but....

Hi All, and happy new Year!

She got an MOT yesterday (my first with her), with a couple of advisories, New front tyre required but that's all she failed on, however they neglected to check the handbrake, and the lower tail gate doesn't lock, I keep it closed via the upper tailgate, when pressing the pad on top of it, it cycles through the opening / locking routine or vice versa but refuses to 'Lock' shut, any ideas? (brand new battery by the way 'Bosch' price £192, cost me £35! so a result right there) I have a year to get bushes / handbrake sorted / CV boots etc (cant afford it right now, as I'm just starting a temporary role)

anyway back to the tailgate, any ideas what this could be?

any ideas / suggestions appreciated

Regards

It isn’t as simple as the latches on the lower tailgate needing lubricating is it.

I often used to move the black plastic bits on the boot latch by hand before closing it on my old one. Lubrication worked for a while but I just got used to doing it manually. 2017 Jaguar F Pace 25t Portfolio - still part of the JLR family 😀

+1 for Jamiehol's latches. My lower doesn't lock sometimes on the offside, needs relasing and shutting "firmly". That may be the adjustment, if any, and I'll feed back when I look further into it. See if the locks in the 'gate operate by "closing" them using a screwdriver or similar. If they don't cycle, it may be they need taking apart and cleaning/repairing or replacing.

On the handbrake, as we have permanent 4x4, testing the brake efficiencies and hadbrake can't be done on the ususal test rig due to likely damage to the transmission (it only turns 2 wheels at a time). Thus an assessment is made. I'll happily stand to be corrected, but that's what my testing lady told me. Cheers

Steve, my lower tailgate didn't shut on my last one or now this one so I just flick the black plastic bit as mentioned before shutting. Right hand side off the tailgate inside at the latch. No idea why they do it though? Thumbs Up

Had the same thing recently. As above, lifting the black clips up will allow it to shut, but a quick squirt of WD40 in both sides cured it for me

Ashamedly I gave almost everything in my eye line a good blast, but yes, the mechanism, the black clips, anywhere I could see a gap in I gave a squirt, been great since

I can’t match his £35, but this was the cheapest one I found with a 5year warranty and free next day delivery.
Remember you need an AGM type for your Westminster.

Hi All

Apologies for delayed response. thanks for all replies I will look into those clips that have been mentioned armed with a can of WD40! and report back, and my thoughts also regarding the handbrake.

In regard to the battery, no link I'm afraid I have a 'Bolt on' to my AA membership £5 p/mth which pays a huge % of the cost for lots of replacement parts I don't recall all the parts, but I'm sure the AA website would have that info, includes labour by the way. I have had to use it now for three of my last cars a Vauxhall Omega / Jag and now of course the RR, the AA bloke (when he came out and condemned the battery) went and collected the new one for me from a local Europarts in Sidcup, and did the change. I just had to use my debit card to pay the £35 there and then hope this is of some help

regards

Hi All
reporting back as mentioned, found the clips on the lower tailgate, worked a treat thanks, now locks, but will have to utse them every time by the look of things, no great problem at all, so long as it locks shut properly

thanks again all for pointing me in the right direction

regards
