Check Dip Beam

Hi,

Did a search and I know this has been covered before but I didn't quite find the answer, so excuse the post!

I had 'check dip beam' come on a couple of weeks ago, and the passenger/nearside dip bulb wasn't working. Turned car off and on again and it worked fine. Did this for a while until the dip bulb just didn't light up anymore.

I bought some Osram bulbs from Powerbulbs online and duly changed both dip bulbs and it worked great......for a day. Turned off car at night last night, no problem at all, turned car on this morning, no passenger side dip light and the 'check dip beam' message again! Turning off and on again/clearing faults with icarsoft etc did nothing.

I bought a replacement bulb to keep me legal as I have to drive this evening, so will change it out, but this will get expensive quick - can someone point to what's wrong, and what part numbers etc I might need to fix the fault properly?

Cheers,

Fish.

Sorry!

It's a 2003 3.0 diesel HSE.

Bulb that was changed was 'Osram D2S 35w 66040' - this was the dip beam bulb for the passenger/nearside of the car (although I changed both sides initially.

Worked fine last yesterday and last night, turned car off, back on again this morning and no light and the 'check dip beam' is back.

Cheers,

Fish.

Thanks Stan,

Is there a fix for this, or if not, a replacement part number?

It's a 2003 model.

Cheers,

Fish.

Have the bulbs actually failed. I would check for possibly corroded contacts in the bulb holder. You could also put the "failed "
bulbs in the other headlight and see what happens.

Thanks guys,

I just put the new bulb in and it's working again (for now). When I first turned on the lights after fitting, neither dip beam bulb came on - turned the lights on and off again and both came on?

I'll see if chap you mention on here has a ballast as I'm sure this bulb won't last long!

Cheers,

Fish

Are they factory Xenon lights? Not all the HSE's had factory fit Xenons on that year, so its possible that your ballast units are aftermarket which may confuse further Current Fleet:-

If its 35w then its xenon, otherwise it would be 55w if it was halogen.

I had this and it was the ballast. New ones on ebay for £28, its not worth buying a second hand one

I did a write up a while back if you search

Best wishes

Just to update on this.....

Fixed this yesterday and it was the igniter in the end - I bought the parts off 'an online auction site' and got 2nd time lucky. The first igniter the wires between the unit and the bulb holder were too short (despite seller saying they would fit) so had to order another one.

I changed the ballast too whilst I was at it.

Headlight unit to come out was easy enough (getting back onto the runners at the bottom not so much!) but the headlight strip itself I found quite tricky, and you have to do this to get the ignitor out.

If of help to anyone, the parts numbers for my 2003 TD6 HSE were:

Ignitor - 1 307 329 059

Ballast - 1 307 329 074

The last 3 digits on the ignitor are what caught me out, so unless it's the above, the wires are different lengths and won't fit.

Cheers,

Fish.
