Our 2003 A4 3.0 sport last had her cambelt/waterpump/tensioners done 5 years ago (recommended interval is 5 years or 60k miles, she's only done 22k since then).

Had a quote of £700 all in to do it at a local Audi specialist, but the car is only worth £1800 tops, we've had her for 10 years and more than got our monies worth out of her, do we get it changed or just run her into the ground? She's far for immaculate, more a work horse if I'm honest (dents on a few panels etc)

We dont want to spend £700 if its not needed (obviously) and are currently weighing up getting it changed or not?

Could last another 5 years could let go today

Try another garage. My Allroad was done for £280 at my local back street garage who has a really talented mechanic, did a great job.

As long as youre prepared to take the hit of a total write off when it goes and the fact it can do it at any time, anywhere run it into the ground, if you can find a more acceptable price get it done. BMW i3 Electric Car

A workhorse, so take out the runnning costs since you bought it, how much has it cost you a week if you binned tomorrow?

Not much, keep it and take a chance. Belts may go or go may not. Lots, do you love it and think can you do it yourself?

Me: 728i E38 last model, 10 years, £1.25 per day, rad top connection failed c£250plus, so ran a year on with altered cheap hose and sold on. Loved the car, someone had a year or two out of it.

You would still prob get £800 with a broken engine, so if it dies you would only lose £1000, and with only 22K since change, I would run it till it breaks. I once got 300,000 miles without a cam belt change, and have had many inexpensive cars do 120,000 miles without a cambelt change before selling them on towards the end of their life as its not cost effective. I have a friend who doesn't earn a lot, and buys cheap cars through necessity and amazing how many years he can get out of them without spending any money on them before they die or fail an MOT.

I would like to point out these are 'commute cars' and my Landrovers have never wanted for anything, but that's because they mean more to me than a means of getting A to B, probably like most here. Previously......
