power steering went heavy.. overnight (FIXED)

hi all,

so driving car like normal parked car for the night, new day start car go to drive off and the steering wheel is extremely heavy...

i know the power steering pump is fine, fluid is full, if range is off i cannot really move steering wheel when started its just very heavy.

now would i be right in thinking the Servotronic Valve Transducer (QFW500040) has failed, as i had not symptoms before today.. and from reading most people mentioned intermittent issue but mine was working fine and now not..

anyways.. anyones advice be good. as replacing seems easy if they bolts are not seized as alot mention this.

Added note, i unplug the Servotronic Valve connector in the drivers side wheel area and power steering is still heavy is does not make a different if its plugged in or not. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Hi,

I have been reading about this, but seems the BCU would bring up other issues with unlocking the car, wipers and lights and things which I don’t have any of those symptoms also can be caused if bcu goes into transport mode but everything works as it should unless i am missing something Sad.. also seems new bcus need coding to car so let’s hope this is not the case as only have a icarsoft lr2 scanner.. it’s just Suddon lose of full assist of power steering.. it has some assist but not fully. Been reading sooooo many threads today.

I have ended up ordering a replacement servotronic valve and 1litre top of the power steering fluid.. just praying the torx bolts come off nicely and don’t strip !

I will update when I do this which should be in couple days.. dam one day with full power assist is hard ! 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Bcu symptoms on mine were only heavy steering and rear pax door not unlocking on the remote. Changed bcu and jobs a good ‘un.

Thanks for letting me know, did you have any scanned error codes ? Which pointed to the BCU and did you buy second replacement ? And have to have it coded to car?

Did the power steering on your just stop working or was it intermittent ?

Sorry for all the questions. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

What Dolphinboy said and it was intermittent on mine so some days the steering had gone and other days the steering was fine. Test it by moving the passenger seat forward and unplugging the BCU to drain the power then reply it back in. I bought a new unit and flashed it myself (Faultmate) having downloaded the coding from the old one.

Regards

John

Thanks for that John, I will give that a try today.

After unplugging the BCU should I give ten mins of so before plugging back in ?

When you did this, did your power steering just start working again ? For while before happening again ? 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Yes, it would work on and off but only needed to be unplugged briefly. There’s three plugs so unplug each one and by the time you’ve unplugged the last one, plug them back in and the steering may work again. Not saying it will, as that depends on the issue with the BCU, but the chances are it will reset the unit. You could also switch the engine off and restart if the PS isn’t working but if it is always inoperative then the restart may not work.

Regards

John

Thanks for your reply,

I unplugged and plugged the BCU back in and also unplugged for 30mins, still not fully assisted power steering still heavy, tried the restarting car lots yesterday and still same Sad

I have the new Servotronic valve coming Thursday so will try that first if that don’t work, will have to look at replacing the BCU.. went through list online checking BCU and things which can cause issue and only issue I have with the car at the moment is the steering.

May get the voltage meter out and see if power it’s going to the valve on steering rack.

It can only be the valve or BCU so fingers crossed for me it will be the valve but I will update like I always do with the result. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Question does anyone know if a second hand BCU contains mileage data? If I bought a second hand one would it adjust my mileage ? Don’t want a secondhand BCU with 200k and this affect my mileage on the car. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Managed to get a second hand BCU good price, from same model as mine with same features regarding auto locking doors so on, from reading online it should just work and re link keys.

So both now arriving tomorrow will try BCU first if that’s works I will return the valve if that don’t work. I will replace the valve. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

No it doesn't change anything and shouldn't need re-programming. Simple swap but be aware that there are 3 part numbers: The original and then 2 updates. They all work so best to get the latest one (mine was RANGE ROVER L322 VOGUE 2006 4.4 V8 BODY ENGINE CONTROL MODULE ECU YWC000922 - the earlier ones were 0921 and 0920 IIRC)

I paid £85 from Posh parts on Fleabay.

Fixed !!!!!

First off thank you so much for your help with this, so the part which fixed it was a replacement BCU with lastest version YWC000922.

See photos attached.

Plugged in and started car steering back to perfect working order !!!! So Happy.. got the replacement part for only £35 so bargain all in all. Will return the valve coming today.

You have to resync keys but takes 5mins. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Only thing I have lose is when I hit 10mph it use to auto lock which I liked. New BCU don’t do this but much rather have power steering again.

Apparently BCU I bought had this feature but seems not. Have to see can find someone with allcoms or idd to enable the feature. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue
