A very scary suspension failure

Hi folks

If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be very grateful !

A few saturdays ago I had a suspension failure on the M42. Thankfully we were in a 40MPH section when it happened. I have to say if we were doing 70MPH the outcome would have been very very different !

I had to hit the brakes hard when I was cut up, there was one hell of a bang then the sterring went odd and I pulled up on the hard shoulder refuge area.

As you can see the top of the hub arm sheared, so the wheel collapsed into the well and onto the damper so bent that pretty severely. I got the car back today after repair and some all round inspection.

The question is why ? Are these componants known to fail ? part of a recall ?

Hard to tell from the photos - combined with my lack of knowledge - but is that the same or different to the failure on this thread -

Looks the same as the issue mentioned in the post above.

This is a catastrophic critical component failure and I would certainly be speaking to JLR for redress on this matter and taking legal advice. Christian.

Sorry to hear about this. Are you within the VIN range 195780 - 228236 as mentioned on the other thread? Kev

Hi and yes, mines in the 204*** range. What I'm more concerned about is if and when the nearside one goes on me ? On the motorway at 70?
I'm going to contact JLR tomorrow but need to think about how I approach them, they must be aware of these issues, just as much they'll also deny it !!

I'd be changing the other side ASAP.

I just checked and my VIN is in the 136*** range - not often that having an older car is good news.

I reported it to DVSA this morning, I don't expect a quick reply. I'm also writing my complaint to JLR. I'm also going to conact a local solicitor and see where my options lie legally.

This and the other thread is very disconcerting. A sad situation for JLR..... for the reckoning will be coming either via DVLA or a civil claim.

I'm glad to hear nobody has been injured but surely its only a matter of time sadly....

What the significance of the start numbers on the VIN range? - I would suspect its all cars from launch until the change of component for the wider shoulder?

Has the vin range been confirmed as the only failures? If so mine should be safe 159*** Bow down even though mine and Ragingrovers cars are both 2014 (seems a big jump from 159-204*** in the same year??) Paul

Point of note: First find a contact email for JLR ! Seems the customer service concept has been swept away and replaced with "experiance".
Well JLR my "experiance" right now has bleen bloody frightening and very expensive.

I've yet to get ther bill, I'll let you all know for info

Update:

Got a call from JLR this morning and they (at the moment) taking my complaint seriously and say they want to look into it with a view to helping me.

Lets see what happens. DVSA has also responded and will be contact again soon.
