TD6 Service Indicator

Early 2006 TD6 Vogue

When should the service indicator actually be displayed on an early 2006 TD6? It seems that in earlier models the service indicator is displayed when the ignition key is set to position II, but I don't seem to see that. Is it only displayed when the service is due in X miles? Is there a way to see when it thinks the next service is due?
